Fyns Amt is a former county in central Denmark, comprising the islands of Funen, Langeland, Tåsinge, Ærø, and approximately 90 other islands, of which only 25 are inhabited. The county was formed on 1 April 1970, comprising the former counties of Odense and Svendborg. The county was abolished from 1 January 2007, when it merged into Region Syddanmark.
Marstal is a town in southern Denmark, located in Ærø municipality on the island of Ærø. Marstal has a population of 2,111 and is the largest town on Ærø. It was the municipal seat of the now abolished Marstal Municipality.
Hvidovre Kommune is a municipality in Region Hovedstaden near Copenhagen on the island of Zealand (Sjælland) in eastern Denmark. The municipality covers an area of 22 km2, and has a total population of 53,416. Its mayor is Helle Moesgaard Adelborg, a member of the Social Democrats (Socialdemokraterne) political party.
Until January 1, 2007 Ledøje-Smørum was a municipality in Copenhagen County on Zealand (Sjælland) island in eastern Denmark, then merged into Egedal. The municipality covered an area of 31 km2 (12 mi²) and had a total population of 10,525 (2005), northwest of nearby Copenhagen.
Until January 1, 2007, Aaskov Municipality was a municipality in Ringkøbing County on the Jutland peninsula in west Denmark. The municipality covered an area of 239 km², and had a total population of 6,999 (2005). Its latest mayor was Jørgen Jørgensen, a member of the Venstre political party. The main town and the site of its municipal council was the town of Kibæk. Another town in the municipality was Sdr. Felding.
Until January 1, 2007 Sydals was a municipality in South Jutland County on the southern part of the island of Als off the east coast of the Jutland peninsula in south Denmark. The municipality covered an area of 95 km2, and had a total population of 6,527 (2005). Its last mayor was Jens Peter Kock. The site of its municipal council was the town of Hørup. Other towns in the municipality were Høruphav, Lysabild, Mommark, Skovby, and Sønderby.
Nakskov is a town in south Denmark. It is situated in Lolland municipality in Region Sjælland on the western coast of the island of Lolland. The town has a population of 12,707. To the west is Nakskov Fjord, an inlet from the Langeland Belt (Langelandsbælt) that runs between the islands of Lolland and Langeland. Nakskov Fjord is a wildlife reserve, known for its bird life.
Ærø is one of the Danish Baltic Sea islands, and part of the Southern Denmark Region.
Odense Municipality is a Danish municipality (kommune) in Southern Denmark on the island of Funen in central Denmark. The municipality covers an area of 304.34 km2 (118 sq mi), and has a population of 204,895. It is the most populous municipality in Region of Southern Denmark.
Until January 1, 2007 Nørre Aaby municipality was a municipality in the former Funen County on the north and west coasts of the island of Funen in southern Denmark. The municipality covered an area of 65 km², and had a total population of 5,626 (2006). Its last mayor was Hanne Christensen, a member of the Venstre political party. The main town and the site of its municipal council was the town of Nørre Aaby. To the north are the waters of Båring Cove and beyond that the Kattegat. To the west are the waters of Fem's Cove and beyond that the Little Belt.
Until 1 January 2007 Rudkøbing municipality was a municipality in the former Funen County on the island of Langeland in south-central Denmark. The municipality included the islands of Strynø and Strynø Kalv, and covered an area of 63 km². It had a total population of 6,676 (2005). Its last mayor was Johan Norden, a member of the Social Democrats (Socialdemokraterne) political party. The main town and the site of its municipal council was the town of Rudkøbing. Part of the former municipality's southern border is defined by the Lindelse Cove. A bridge connects the former municipality at the town of Rudkøbing over the islands of Siø and Tåsinge to the town of Svendborg on the island of Funen.
Until January 1, 2007 Tranekær municipality was a municipality in the former Funen County on the island of Langeland in south-central Denmark. The municipality included the islands of Siø, and covered an area of 107 km2. It had a total population of 3,467 (2005). Its last mayor was Jørgen Nielsen, a member of the Venstre political party.
Marstal municipality, is a former municipality in Funen County on the island of Ærø in southern Denmark. Since 1 January 2006 it has been part of Ærø municipality. Its territory included the islands of Birkholm and Halmø, and covered an area of 17 km². In 2005, it had a total population of 3,208. Its last mayor was Karsten Landro, a member of the Conservative People's Party political party.
Svendborg municipality is a municipality in Region of Southern Denmark on the southeast coast of the island of Funen, as well as on the islands of Drejø, Hjortø, Skarø, Thurø, and Tåsinge off Funen's southeastern shores in south-central Denmark. The municipality covers an area of 418 km², and has a total population of 59,040 (2008). Its mayor is Bo Hansen (2017), a member of the Social Democrats (Socialdemokraterne) political party. The main town and the site of its municipal council is the city of Svendborg.
Årslev municipality is a former municipality in the island of Funen in central Denmark. It merged into Faaborg-Midtfyn municipality on 1 January 2007. The former municipality covered an area of 74 km², and had a total population of 9,365 (2005). It belonged to Funen County and its last mayor was Hans Jørgensen, a member of the Social Democrats (Socialdemokraterne) political party.
Until January 1, 2007 Ullerslev Municipality was a municipality in the former Funen County, on the east coast of the island of Funen, in central Denmark. The municipality covered an area of 54 km2, and had a total population of 5,190 (2006). Its last mayor was Erik Christensen, a member of the Social Democrats.
The Region of Southern Denmark is an administrative region of Denmark established on Monday 1 January 2007 as part of the 2007 Danish Municipal Reform, which abolished the traditional counties ("amter") and set up five larger regions. At the same time, smaller municipalities were merged into larger units, cutting the number of municipalities from 271 before 1 January 2007 to 98. The reform diminished the power of the regional level dramatically in favor of the local level and the central government in Copenhagen. The Region of Southern Denmark has 22 municipalities. The reform was implemented in Denmark on 1 January 2007, although the merger of the Funish municipalities of Ærøskøbing and Marstal, being a part of the reform, was given the go-ahead to be implemented on Sunday 1 January 2006, one year before the main reform. It borders Schleswig-Holstein (Germany) to the south and Central Denmark Region to the north and is connected to Region Zealand via the Great Belt Fixed Link.
Until 1 January 2007, Ebeltoft municipality was a municipality in Aarhus County on the east coast of the Jutland peninsula in central Denmark. The region lies in a geographic region known as southern Djursland, and more specifically Mols. The municipality covered an area of 276 km2, and had a total population of 14.997 (2003). Its last mayor was Jørgen Brøgger. The main town and the site of its municipal council was the town of Ebeltoft.
Ærø Municipality is a municipality occupying the 88 km² island of Ærø in southern Denmark. The municipality belongs to Region of Southern Denmark. The municipality also encompasses Birkholm and the uninhabited islands Lilleø, Dejrø and Halmø.
Denmark is divided into five regions, which contain 98 municipalities. The Capital Region has 29 municipalities, Southern Denmark 22, Central Denmark 19, Zealand 17 and North Denmark 11.
