Sergi Bruguera successfully defended his title by defeating compatriot Alberto Berasategui in the final 6–3, 7–5, 2–6, 6–1 to win the Men's Singles tennis title at the 1994 French Open. It was the first ever all-Spanish men's singles final.

Rafael Nadal successfully defended his title by defeating Roger Federer in the final 1–6, 6–1, 6–4, 7–6(7–4), to win the Men's Singles tennis title at the 2006 French Open. This was Federer's first defeat in a Grand Slam final. He had had the chance to become the first man since Rod Laver in 1969 to hold all four Grand Slam tournaments at once, having won the preceding Wimbledon, U.S. Open and Australian Open titles. This feat would ultimately be achieved a decade later by Novak Djokovic, at the same tournament, who reached the quarterfinals at the Grand Slam for the first time.

Tony Trabert was the defending champion, but was ineligible to compete after turning professional. The competition lasted from Monday 25 June to Saturday 7 July 1956.
