The Étoile Sportive du Sahel, is a sports club from Sousse in the Sahel region of Tunisia, known primarily for its football and basketball team. The club also has sections for handball, volleyball, judo and wrestling. ESS was founded on 11 May 1925 after a general meeting under the chairmanship of Chedly Boujemla, Ali Laârbi and Ahmed Zaklaoui, at the headquarters of the Association of the ancient French-Arab School in Laroussi Zarouk Street, in the heart of the old town of Sousse. The aim of the meeting was to establish a sports education society. The Tunisian flag was chosen in the selection of the colors of the team. The red shirt with the star and the white shorts. The French colonial authorities prevented the use of these colors, but with the insistence of the team leaders they prevailed and in the latter they played this kit. In English the name means SportStar of the Sahel (coast)

On the other hand, teams from Benin, Uganda and Zimbabwe were disqualified because their federations were in debt to CAF; Power Dynamos were disqualified because the Zambian federation did not name its entrant in time as well as the Mauritanian side ASC SNIM. Another two teams withdrew before the 1st leg of the second round, Rayon Sports from Rwanda and LPRC Oilers from Liberia.

The 1995 African Cup Winners' Cup football club tournament was won by Jeunesse Sportive de Kabylie in two-legged final victory against Julius Berger FC. This was the twenty-first season that the tournament took place for the winners of each African country's domestic cup. Twenty-eight sides entered the competition, with KAC Marrakech and Horoya AC withdrawing before the 1st leg of the first round and Étoile du Congo withdrawing after the 1st leg of the first round. Another two teams withdrew during further stages of the competition; Wallidan before the 1st leg of the second round and AS Marsa before the 1st leg of the quarterfinals. No preliminary round took place during this season of the competition.

The 2002 African Cup Winners' Cup football club tournament was won by Wydad AC in two-legged final victory against Asante Kotoko This was the twenty-eighth season that the tournament took place for the winners of each African country's domestic cup. Thirty-seven sides entered the competition. Three teams were disqualified for not showing up during the different stages of the competition, starting with Togolese side Sara Sport who failed to arrive for the 1st leg of the preliminary round, then South Africans Kaizer Chiefs who failed to arrive for the 2nd leg of the first round and finally the Réunion representative Jeanne d'Arc who failed to show up for their 2nd leg match of the second round.
The last two teams both failed to show up for their 2nd leg match against the Malagasy side US Transfoot.
