Pitt fields 19 university-sponsored varsity teams at the highest level of competitive collegiate athletics in the United States: the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) for American football.
James Patrick Dixon II is an American college basketball coach who is the head coach of the TCU Horned Frogs men's team, where he played college ball. He previously served as the head coach of the University of Pittsburgh men's basketball team from 2003 through 2016.

The Duquesne Dukes represent Duquesne University in college basketball. The team, which started in 1914, has only ever played in NCAA Division I and has had six appearances in the NCAA Tournament. The Idaho Vandals men's basketball team represents the University of Idaho, located in Moscow, Idaho, in NCAA Division I basketball competition. They currently compete in the Big Sky Conference. The Vandals are coached by Alex Pribble and play home games at the new Idaho Central Credit Union Arena. This venue, which also houses the women's basketball team, opened in 2021 as the replacement for the Vandals' primary home of the Kibbie Dome, whose basketball configuration was known as Cowan Spectrum, and alternate venue of Memorial Gym.

They were led by eighth-year head coach Jamie Dixon, in his twelfth total year at the university. The team played its home games in the Petersen Events Center in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and are members of the Big East Conference. They finished the season 28–6, 15–3 in Big East play to capture the regular season conference championship. As the 1 seed in the 2011 Big East men's basketball tournament, they were upset by 9 seed Connecticut in their first tournament game. They received an at-large bid in the 2011 NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament as the 1 seed in the southeast region. They defeated 16 seed UNC Asheville in the first round before being upset by 8 seed Butler in the second round.
Joe Lombardi is an American basketball coach currently the head coach for the Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) Crimson Hawks of Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference in NCAA Division II. Prior to taking the head coaching position at IUP, Lombardi served as an assistant coach, including a nine-year tenure at La Salle University and three season under Jamie Dixon at the University of Pittsburgh. In his fourth season with the Crimson Hawks in 2009–10, Lombardi led the team to the 2010 NCAA Men's Division II Basketball Championship where they were defeated by the Cal Poly Pomona Broncos. Following the season, Lomardi was named as the 2010 Basketball Times Division II National Coach of the Year.
The 1982 Eastern 8 men's basketball tournament was the sixth annual postseason tournament of the Eastern Athletic Association, popularly known as the Eastern 8. This was also the last tournament to be branded as "Eastern 8"; in the following school year, the conference adopted its current name, the Atlantic 10 Conference. The first round was held at campus sites and the semifinals and final were held in Pittsburgh at the Civic Arena. Pittsburgh defeated West Virginia 79-72 to win their second tournament championship. Clyde Vaughan of Pittsburgh was named the Most Outstanding Player of the tournament.
The 2014 Atlantic Coast Conference men's basketball tournament was the postseason men's basketball tournament for the Atlantic Coast Conference held from March 12 to 16 in Greensboro, North Carolina, at the Greensboro Coliseum. This was the first ACC Tournament to include 15 teams, a result of the conference adding Syracuse, Pitt, and Notre Dame, and also the last to feature Maryland, which left after the season for the Big Ten Conference. Seeds #5 through #9 received a first-round bye, and the top four seeds received a first- and second-round "double bye".

Led by head coach Roy Chipman, the Panthers finished with a record of 20–10. They received an automatic bid to the 1982 NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament where they lost in the first round to Pepperdine. This was Pitt's last season in the Eastern 8 Conference. They moved to the Big East Conference next season.
