The 2. Bundesliga is the second division of professional football in Germany. It was implemented 11 years after the founding of the Fußball-Bundesliga as the new second division for professional football. The 2. Bundesliga is ranked below the Bundesliga and above the 3. Football clubs from eastern Germany thus participated for the first time in the DFB-Pokal. 87 teams competed in the final tournament, which had thus to be extended to seven rounds. It began on 1 August 1991 and ended on 23 May 1992.

The 2001–02 DFB-Pokal was the 59th season of the annual German football cup competition. 64 teams competed in the tournament of six rounds which began on 24 August 2001 and ended on 11 May 2002.
