Seven CSV national teams entered qualification. The teams were distributed according to their position in the FIVB Senior Men's Rankings as of 15 January 2004 using the serpentine system for their distribution. (Rankings shown in brackets)

24 teams competed in the 2002 FIVB Volleyball Men's World Championship, with two places allocated for the hosts, Argentina and the titleholder, Italy. In the qualification process for the 2002 FIVB World Championship, the Five FIVB confederations were allocated a share of the 22 remaining spots.

The CSV qualification for the 2014 FIVB Volleyball Women's World Championship saw member nations compete for two places at the finals in Italy. The champion team at the 2013 Women's South American Volleyball Championship, plus the best team from the qualification tournament qualified for the World Championship.

The CSV qualification for the 2014 FIVB Volleyball Men's World Championship saw member nations compete for three places at the finals in Poland. The two best-ranked teams from the 2013 Men's South American Volleyball Championship, plus one team from the qualification tournament qualified for the 2014 World Championship.

The qualification for the 2016 Men's Olympic Volleyball Tournament was held from 8 September 2015 to 5 June 2016. Twelve teams qualified, the hosts, the FIVB World Cup champions and runners-up, five continental Olympic qualification tournament champions and four teams from two World Olympic qualification tournaments. Teams already qualified for the event were not eligible to play in the following qualification tournaments.
