The 2009–10 MOL Liga season was the second season played, of this international ice hockey. Teams from Hungary and Romania participated. The total number of teams had gone down from the first season. Alba Volan's farm team left, and three Romanian teams left, while one Romanian team joined.
Ice hockey is a contact team sport played on ice, usually in a rink, in which two teams of skaters use their sticks to shoot a vulcanized rubber puck into their opponent's net to score points. The sport is known to be fast-paced and physical, with teams usually consisting of six players each: one goaltender, and five players who skate up and down the ice trying to take the puck and score a goal against the opposing team.
Ferencvárosi Torna Club Jégkorong Szakosztály is a Hungarian ice hockey team that currently plays in the OB I bajnokság and in the MOL Liga. They play their home games at Pesterzsébeti Jégcsarnok, located in Budapest. In 1950–1951 the club was named ÉDOSZ Budapest and from 1951 to 1957 it was named Budapesti Kinizsi.

Gheorghe "Gică" Hagi is a Romanian former professional footballer, considered one of the best attacking midfielders in Europe during the 1980s and '90s and the greatest Romanian footballer of all time. Galatasaray fans called him "Comandante" and Romanians call him "Regele". He is currently the owner and manager of Viitorul Constanța.
Cristian Eugen Chivu is a Romanian former footballer. He usually played as a left back, but he was also used as a central defender.
Anghel Iordănescu, also known as "Tata Puiu", is a Romanian former footballer and former manager of the Romania national team, who played as a forward. In 2007, Iordănescu retired from football, and the following February, after his predecessor resigned, he became a member of the Romanian Senate, sitting on the Social Democratic Party benches. On 26 December 2011, he became an independent senator, affiliated to the National Union for the Progress of Romania. His son, Edward Iordănescu, is also a former footballer and current manager.
