They finished the season 19–14, 13–5 in Horizon League play to share the regular season conference title with Butler and Cleveland State. They advanced to the championship game of the 2011 Horizon League men's basketball tournament before losing to Butler. They were invited to the 2011 National Invitation Tournament where they lost in the first round to Northwestern.

They were invited to the 2012 College Basketball Invitational where they lost in the first round to TCU.
Edward McCants is an American basketball player. He is best known for his All-American college career at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, where he led the Panthers to the school's first Sweet 16 appearance in the 2005 NCAA basketball tournament.

They defeated Northern Kentucky in the first round of the Horizon League tournament to advance to the second round where they lost to Green Bay. Despite having 20 wins, they did not participate in a postseason tournament.

The Norse, led by second-year head coach John Brannen, played their home games at BB&T Arena in Highland Heights, Kentucky as members of the Horizon League. They finished the season 24–11, 13–6 in Horizon League play to finish in a tie for third place. As the No. 4 seed in the Horizon League tournament, they defeated Wright State, Youngstown State, and Milwaukee to win the Horizon League tournament. They received the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament in the school's first year of eligibility after its transition to a Division I school. They lost in the first round to Kentucky.

They were champions of the Horizon League tournament to earn an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament where they received a #12 seed and defeated No. 5 seed Alabama and No. 4 seed Boston College to reach their 1st Sweet 16 in school history. Their season ended after losing to the eventual National runner-up and No. 1 overall seed Illinois.
