The 2012–13 Illinois Piasa season was the seventh season of the Illinois Piasa indoor soccer club and third as a franchise in the Professional Arena Soccer League. The Piasa, named for the Piasa Bird of Native American legend, are an Eastern Division team who played their home games in The Sports Academy in Glen Carbon, Illinois. [2] The team was led by owner Jim Williams and head coach Jason Norsic.

Glen Carbon is a village in Madison County, Illinois, United States, 19 miles (31 km) northeast of St. Louis. The population was 12,934 at the 2010 census.

Season summary

The team struggled in the regular season, compiling a 4–12 record. They placed fourth in the five-team Eastern Division and failed to advance to the postseason. The team fared better at home than on the road with all four of their wins coming on home turf. Two of the Piasa's four wins came against the Ohio Vortex but Illinois also provided Ohio with its only win of the season.

Ohio Vortex

Ohio Vortex was an American professional indoor soccer team based in Canton, Ohio. They joined the Professional Arena Soccer League in 2009. The Ohio Vortex was a non-profit organization that donates a portion of their revenue to local charities. The team was founded by former Canton Invaders player Nick Bogdan.

The Piasa participated in the 2012–13 United States Open Cup for Arena Soccer. They received a bye in the Wild Card round then lost to the Chicago Mustangs in the Round of 16, ending their tournament run.

2012–13 United States Open Cup for Arena Soccer

The 2012–13 US Open Arena Soccer Championship is the fifth edition of an open knockout style tournament for arena/indoor soccer. In this edition, teams from the Professional Arena Soccer League, Premier Arena Soccer League, and other independent indoor soccer teams participate in the tournament.

A bye in sports refers to organizers scheduling a competitor to not participate in a given round of competition, due to one of several circumstances.

Off-field moves

For the 2012–13 season, the team named former goalkeeper Jason Norsic as head coach. He replaced both Joe Reiniger and Justin McMillian who had previously shared coaching duties. Norsic played college soccer at Southwestern Illinois College and McKendree University before playing professionally for the St. Louis Steamers, Swanner United FC, St. Louis Illusion, Piasa FC, and Illinois Piasa. Joe Reiniger is a professional soccer player and coach. He grew up in Caseyville. He currently plays for arena soccer for the St. Louis Illusion.

Southwestern Illinois College

Southwestern Illinois College is the fifth largest community college in Illinois with campuses in Belleville, Granite City, and Red Bud, plus 20 off-campus sites throughout the district, including Scott Air Force Base and the East St. Louis Community College Center.

McKendree University (McK), formerly known as McKendree College, is a private liberal arts university in Lebanon, Illinois. Founded in 1828 as the Lebanon Seminary, it is the oldest college in Illinois. McKendree enrolls approximately 2,300 undergraduates and nearly 700 graduate students representing 25 countries and 29 states. In the undergraduate program, on average there are 51% females and 49% males. The institution remains affiliated with the United Methodist Church. The school renamed McKendree University beginning with the 2007–08 academic year. McKendree University comprises a College of Arts and Science, a School of Business, a School of Health Professions, and a School of Education.

The team's official sportswear for the 2012–13 season was supplied by Admiral Sportswear, the world's oldest soccer brand. [4]

Admiral Sportswear

Admiral Sportswear is a British internationally recognized football, cricket and sportswear brand. It reached the peak of its success in the 1970s and early 1980s through a series of prestigious football team sponsorships.

The Piasa's dance team for the 2012-13 season, the Piasa Pizazz Pro Dance Team, was led by Danielle Lusicic-Wise. [5]

At the November 9, 2012, home game, the team organized a canned food drive for a food bank in the St. Louis, Missouri, area. Fans received a discount on tickets when they presented a canned food donation at the box office. [6]

Awards and honors

On December 11, 2012, the Professional Arena Soccer League named rookie goalkeeper Alan Hagerty as the Player of the Week. The league cited his 32 saves and second-half shutout of rival Rockford Rampage on December 3, leading the Piasa to their first win of the season. [7]

The 2012–13 Chicago Mustangs season was the first season of the new Chicago Mustangs professional indoor soccer club. The Mustangs, a Central Division team in the Professional Arena Soccer League, played their home games in the Grand Sports Arena in Hoffman Estates, Illinois. After regional playoffs in late February, the three regional winners and host Chicago Mustangs competed at the Sears Centre for the Ron Newman Cup on March 15–16, 2014. The Mustangs capped a perfect season by winning the league championship.

The 2013–14 Cincinnati Saints season was the first season in the Professional Arena Soccer League (PASL) for the Cincinnati Saints professional indoor soccer club. The Saints, an Eastern Division team, played their home games at the Tri-County Soccerplex in Cincinnati, Ohio. The team was led by general manager Mackenzie Long and interim head coach Chris Morman with assistant coach Kyle Kammer. Matt Brienes was the head coach for the first 9 games of the season before being replaced by Morman. The team finished with a 5–11 record, qualified for the playoffs, and were eliminated in the Eastern Division Semifinal.
