The Summit League, or The Summit, is an NCAA Division I intercollegiate athletic conference with its membership mostly located in the Midwestern United States from Indiana and Illinois on the East of the Mississippi River to the Dakotas and Nebraska on the West, with additional members in the Western state of Colorado and the Southern state of Oklahoma. Founded as the Association of Mid-Continent Universities in 1982, it was rebranded as the Mid-Continent Conference in 1989. On June 1, 2007, the conference changed its name from the Mid-Continent Conference. League headquarters are in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

Purdue Fort Wayne has competed in the Summit League since the 2007–08 season. The team has never played in the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Tournament. The Purdue Fort Wayne Mastodons, formerly known as the IPFW Mastodons and Fort Wayne Mastodons, are the athletic teams of Purdue University Fort Wayne (PFW). The Mastodons compete as a NCAA Division I school in the Summit League for most sports and in the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association for men's volleyball. In July 2020, PFW will leave the Summit League for the Horizon League; this will not affect the school's MIVA membership. The official announcement of this move noted that PFW would be near the geographic center of its new league, with an average distance of 170 miles (270 km) from the other members. At that time, media also noted that PFW's longest road trip in the Horizon League would be shorter than its shortest Summit League trip. The university participates in 16 men’s and women’s sports. Before joining NCAA Division I athletics, IPFW competed in the Great Lakes Valley Conference in the NCAA Division II.

As a regular season league champion who was also the #1 seed in their league tournament, they received an automatic bid to the National Invitation Tournament where they lost in the first round to San Diego State.
Jonathan Glenn Coffman is an American college basketball coach, currently men's head coach at Purdue University Fort Wayne. Coffman was hired as an assistant to head coach IPFW head coach Tony Jasick in 2011. When Jasick chose to leave for Jacksonville in 2014, Coffman was promoted to head coach. After earning a berth in the 2015 CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament in his first season, Coffman led the Mastodons to a share of the Summit League regular season championship in 2015–16 and was named the league's Coach of the Year.
