The United States national rugby sevens team began the 2016-17 World Rugby Sevens Series slowly, sitting in 11th place after the first three rounds. The U.S. was missing certain key players from the previous season. The U.S. turned things around mid-season. In the second half of the season, the team for the first time reached four consecutive semifinals: first at the USA Sevens where the U.S. finished third; then at the Canada Sevens where Perry Baker scored 9 tries including his 100th career try; [1] followed by Hong Kong and Singapore. The U.S. finished the season in fifth place overall, a record high for the team. [2]
The United States national rugby sevens team competes in international rugby sevens competitions. The main competition they play every year is the World Rugby Sevens Series, a series of ten tournaments played around the globe that includes the USA Sevens tournament in Las Vegas every spring. The team also participates in major tournaments every four years, such as the Summer Olympics, the Rugby World Cup Sevens, and the Pan American Games. The national sevens team is organized by USA Rugby, and the team has been led by Head Coach Mike Friday since 2014.
The 2017 USA Sevens was the fourteenth edition of the USA Sevens tournament, and the fifth tournament of the 2016–17 World Rugby Sevens Series. The tournament was played on 3–5 March 2017 at Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The 2017 Canada Sevens was the second edition of the Canada Sevens tournament, and the sixth tournament of the 2016–17 World Rugby Sevens Series. The tournament was played on 11–12 March 2017 at BC Place in Vancouver, BC.
Perry Baker and Danny Barrett were both selected to the 2016-17 Dream Team.

Kevin Sinfield, MBE is the Director of Rugby for the Leeds Rhinos in the Super League and an English former professional rugby league footballer who captained the Leeds Rhinos in the Super League. His usual position was loose forward, although he sometimes played both stand-off and hooker.
The World Rugby Sevens Player of the Year is awarded by World Rugby each year. It was first awarded in 2004. The award is based in large part on the player’s performance over the course of the World Rugby Sevens Series, along with other Sevens tournaments during the year.
Napolioni Vonowale Nalaga is a Fijian rugby union footballer. He plays as a wing, flanker and Centre for London Irish. He is nicknamed Napoleon or Naps or Napo. His father, Kavekini Nalaga also represented Fiji in the 80's and just like his son, he played on the wing.
Kurt Thomas Baker is a New Zealand rugby union player. He plays in the fullback, wing and at centre positions for Manawatu in the Mitre 10 Cup. He played for the Māori All Blacks and was a New Zealand Sevens representative, having played in 22 Sevens World Series tournaments, a Rugby Sevens World Cup and featured in Gordon Tietjens squad to take part at the 2010 Commonwealth Games.
Jarrod Croker is an Australian rugby league footballer and captain of the Canberra Raiders in the National Rugby League. A goal-kicking centre, he has played his entire career to date with the Canberra Raiders, with whom he became the 2012, 2015 and 2016 top point-scorer. Croker is a Country Origin, Prime Minister's XIII, NRL All Stars and World All Stars representative. In 2016, Croker won the Dally M Captain of the year award. Croker is the Canberra Raiders highest point-scorer in their history.
Collins Injera is a Kenyan rugby player. He holds the second place for number of tries scored on the World Rugby Sevens Series with 271. He is known for his achievements with Kenyan national rugby sevens team.
Luke Morahan is an Australian rugby union player who currently plays at English club Bristol Bears and has multiple caps with the Australian Wallabies. He plays on the wings or at centre.
Beauden John Barrett is a New Zealand rugby union player. He plays in the first five-eighth position for Taranaki and the Wellington based Super Rugby side, the Hurricanes, and for New Zealand's national team the All Blacks. He was a key member of the 2015 Rugby World Cup winning team. Barrett also plays fullback and wing as demonstrated with Taranaki and the All Blacks. Barrett won the World Rugby Player of the Year award in 2016 and 2017, having also been a nominee for the award in 2018, and is only the second player to win the award in back-to-back years, after former teammate Richie McCaw.
Kisi Keomaka "Maka" Unufe is an American rugby union player who plays for the United States national rugby sevens team. Unufe is from Provo, Utah, United States.
Bernard Foley is an Australian rugby player with the Australia national rugby team and the New South Wales Waratahs in Super Rugby. He can cover both fullback and fly-half. Foley has earned the nickname "the iceman" after successful game winning penalty goals, 2 August 2014, 18 October 2015
Kayle Deon van Zyl is a South African rugby union player, currently playing with Italian side Rugby Calvisano, currently competing in the Top12 and European Rugby Continental Shield. He has the ability to play in any position in the back-line but has thus far mostly featured as a fullback. He featured in the Pro12 and the European Rugby Challenge Cup competitions playing a total of 1825 minutes in 2016/17 season for Zebre.
Madison John Hughes is an American rugby union player who is the captain of the United States national rugby sevens team. Hughes was named captain of the United States national team at the start of the 2014 Sevens World Series, shortly after the appointment of new Head Coach Mike Friday. Hughes captained the US Eagles to their highest ever finish in the sevens series in the 2014/2015 season, a significant improvement on the team's 12th place finish the previous year. This feat was matched with another strong year in the 2015/2016 Season, where Hughes was the highest points scorer in the World Series.
Richard Fou'a Mo'unga is a New Zealand rugby union player who currently plays as a first five-eighth or fullback for Canterbury in New Zealand's domestic Mitre 10 Cup and the Crusaders in the international Super Rugby competition.

The United States national rugby sevens team season began the 2015–16 World Rugby Sevens Series by "shocking the world" when it defeated New Zealand for the first time at 2015 Dubai Sevens. The United States team beat the 12-time World Series champion in pool play and again in the tournament's third-place match before a third victory in as many matches in the 2015 South Africa Sevens Plate Semifinal. The U.S. once again finished the season in sixth, tying its best ever finish. The previous season's scoring records were broken again, as Perry Baker notched 48 tries and Madison Hughes scored 331 points.
The 2017–18 United States national rugby sevens team season included both the 2017–18 World Rugby Sevens Series and the 2018 Rugby World Cup Sevens. The season began badly. In the first tournament of the 2017–18 World Rugby Sevens Series in Dubai, 2017 World Rugby Player of the Year Perry Baker suffered a concussion, and the United States team limped to a last place finish. The U.S. improved from that point on, reaching the semifinals of the Australia Sevens. The team then won the 2018 USA Sevens, the first time the U.S. won their home tournament, boosted in large part by Perry Baker, who led all scorers with 8 tries. Baker, along with forwards Ben Pinkelman and Danny Barrett all made the tournament Dream Team. Overall the team displayed inconsistent performances, reaching the Cup semifinals three times, but also failing to qualify for the cup quarterfinals three times. Despite the inconsistent play, the U.S. finished sixth overall.
Rieko Edward Ioane is a New Zealand professional rugby union footballer who plays as a wing for New Zealand franchise Blues and the New Zealand national team. In his youth career, he was selected to play in the 2014 and 2015 Sevens World Series for New Zealand and took part in Auckland Grammar School first XV, the top representative team in secondary school.
