On June 16, 2021, a Let L-410UVP-E, operated by Kin Avia airlines, crashed three minutes after takeoff from Kavumu Airport, Democratic Republic of the Congo. All three occupants on board, including both pilots, were killed in the accident. [1]

A Let L-410UVP-E operated by Kin Avia crashed after takeoff from Kavumu Airport in Bukavu, Democratic Republic of the Congo on June 16, 2021. The flight, carrying 1.6 tons of sheet metal, was flying to Shabunda Airport in Shabunda Territory, Democratic Republic of the Congo. [4] The three occupants of the airplane, a Russian captain, a Congolese first officer, and one passenger, were killed. [5] [6] The aircraft was operating as a cargo flight, [7] and a cargo shift caused it to suddenly pitch up less than 30 seconds after takeoff and entered a full aerodynamic stall. [8] The aircraft struck the ground with a substantial vertical speed but with a nearly level attitude. [9] Another government source indicated that investigators would be looking into whether the aircraft was overloaded at takeoff. [10]

Rescuers found the captain and the passenger dead when they arrived. The first officer was found alive in critical condition, but later died of his injuries. [11] They took the remains of the victims to the Pakistani United Nations camp near the site of the accident. [6]

The aircraft, registration 9S-GRJ was built in 1987 and originally operated by Aeroflot as СССР-67600. It was purchased by Kin Avia in 2007. [9]

The accident led to calls for the modernization of the Kavumu airport by the New Dynamics of Civil Society (French : Nouvelle Dynamique de la Société Civile (NDSCI)), a Congolese citizens movement. The organization said that the accident was a symptom of what it called amateurism and complacency in the maintenance of aircraft at the airport. [12]

On June 21, 2007 an overloaded Free Airlines Let L-410UVP in Karibu Airways livery crashed shortly after takeoff from Kamina Town for Lubumbashi, Democratic Republic of Congo. Landing in a swamp east of the unpaved strip, the aircraft came to rest inverted in the water.

On 25 August 2010, a Let L-410 Turbolet passenger aircraft of Filair crashed on approach to Bandundu Airport in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, killing all but one of the 21 people on board.

Tropical Airways Flight 1301 Domestic short-haul passenger flight

Tropical Airways Flight 1301 was a domestic short-haul passenger flight, flying from Hugo Chávez International Airport in Cap-Haïtien, Haiti to the commune of Port-de-Paix which crashed onto a sugarcane field less than 10 minutes after take off on the evening of 24 August 2003. The aircraft was a 19-seater Let L-410 Turbolet carrying 19 passengers and 2 crew. Witnesses stated that the aircraft caught fire during take-off and exploded when it hit the ground.
