The 28th Annual South African Music Awards was the 28th ceremony of the South African Music Awards. The ceremony was broadcast on SABC 1 hosted by Lawrence Maleka and Nandi Madida on August 28, 2022.

Contents

Nominees were announced on June 7, 2022. [1] Zakes Bantwini lead the nominations with seven each, ahead of Msaki with 5 nominations. [2] [3]

Background

The 28th South African Music Awards partnered with TikTok for the first time to promote the ceremony. [4] [5]

Three categories; Record of the Year, Music Video of the Year, SAMPRA Artist of the Year, were announced on June 3, 2022. [6]

Nominees of the last category sponsored by TikTok was announced on August 14, 2022. [8]

The first ceremony was held at City Superbowl, Rustenburg on 27 August was broadcast live on YouTube and TikTok, hosted by Mpho Popps and Robot Boii. [9]

Nomfundo Ngcobo, known professionally as Nomfundoh Moh is a South African singer. Born and raised in Ndwendwe, KwaZulu-Natal, her career began at the age of 16 in 2016. Moh first gained recognition after releasing "Lilizela" in 2021, which received platinum certification in South Africa.

Makhosazana Princess Masongo, professionally known as Azana is a South African singer and songwriter. Born and raised in Chesterville, her musical career began at the age of 15. Having signed a record deal with Big City Dreams, Azana's debut studio album Ingoma (2020), debuted number one in South Africa. Its lead single "Your Love" was certified double platinum by the Recording Industry of South Africa (RiSA).

Kabelo Petrus Motha is a South African DJ and record producer, popularly known as Kabza De Small. He is a major figure in the amapiano genre of house music. "Phakade Lami" is a single by South African singer Nomfundo Moh featuring Zimbabwean-born Sha Sha and South African singer Ami Faku, released on October 11, 2021, by Universal, as album's third single from her debut studio album Amagama (2022). It was produced by Celimpilo Manyathi, Martin Manqoba Sosibo, Charmaine Mapimbiro.

Palesa Nomthandazo Phumelele Modiga, professionally known as Zoë Modiga is a South African singer and songwriter. Modiga first gained recognition as contestant on The Voice South Africa 2016.

The 2022 Basadi in Music Awards is the first edition of Basadi in Music Awards. The ceremony took place at Gallagher Convention Centre, Midrand on October 15, 2022 hosted by Anele Zondo and Moozlie streamed live on YouTube and Instagram.

"iMali" is a single by South African DJ & Producer Karyendasoul and Zakes Bantwini featuring South African singer Nana Atta, released on October 22, 2021 through Universal Music as EP's lead single. It was produced by Bonga Ntozini and Zakhele Madida.
