Adani Foundation is an Indian non-profit organization which was founded in 1996 by Gautam Adani. It is wholly owned by Adani Group. It is considered one of the major corporate-funded foundations operating in India. [1]

History

The foundation was established in 1996 by Adani Group to bring sustainable development and inclusive growth via developmental projects in post-liberalized India. [2] Currently, Gautam Adani serves as the President of the Foundation, while his wife, Priti Adani, serves as the Chairperson. [3] [4] It began its operations around Mundra in Kutch, and now works in over 18 states that include 2250 villages. [5]

Initiatives

The foundation focuses on four key areas including education, community health, sustainable livelihood development, and community infrastructure development. [3]

Education

The foundation works towards making basic education accessible and affordable. Also, it runs a parallel program to adopt government schools in rural and remote areas. [6]

Healthcare

Under healthcare initiatives, the foundation works towards delivering healthcare services in rural parts of India. It runs Mobile Health Care Units (MHCUs), hospitals, and clinics, and organises general as well as specialised health check-up camps. [6]

Sustainable livelihood

Specific sustainable livelihood programs are run by the foundation for fishermen communities, farmers, and tribal population. [6]

Community infrastructure

Under community infrastructure initiatives, the foundation runs projects towards providing portable drinking water, village roads and solar-powered lightining in the rural parts of India. [7] [6]

Schools

All foundation-owned schools provide cost-free education to meritorious students from economically weaker sections of society. [11] [13]

Udaan

Project Udaan is a learning-based initiative by the foundation that organizes trips for young students to provide them exposure to mega industrial structures. [17]

SuPoshan

The foundation initiated Project SuPoshan in 2016. [18] The objective of Project Suposhan is to reduce malnutrition and anemia amongst adolescent girls and pregnant and lactating women, create awareness about the issue of malnutrition and anemia and related factors amongst all stakeholders and the role they may play in curbing the issue, create a pool of resources to be utilized for combating the issue of Malnutrition and Anaemia and to support efforts in reducing infant mortality rate and maternal mortality ratio. Swachhagraha

Swachhagraha is a joint initiative of the Adani Foundation and the Centre for Environment Education (CEE) in support of Swachh Bharat Mission. [20]

Saksham

Saksham is a project deployed via Adani Skill Development Centre (ASDC) by providing vocational training and skill development to the members of women-led cooperatives. [21] [22] [23]

Philanthropy

In 2020, during the coronavirus outbreak, Adani Foundation donated ₹1 billion to the PM CARES Fund. [24] [25] [26] [27] [28] In addition to this, it also contributed ₹50 million and ₹10 million to the Gujarat Chief Minister Relief Fund and Maharashtra Chief Minister Relief Fund respectively. [29] [21]

In April 2020, Foundation contributed ₹50 lakh to International Society for Krishna Consciousness, Dwarka, Delhi for the emergency food distribution purpose in National Capital Region (India). [30]

Although the documentation for the constitution of the fund has not been made public, the Government of India has stated that the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, is the chairman of the fund, and that trustees include the Minister of Defence, Rajnath Singh; Minister of Home Affairs, Amit Shah, and Minister of Finance, Nirmala Sitharaman, in the Government of India.
