Akashi Station (明石駅, Akashi-eki) is a passenger railway station located in the city of Akashi, Hyōgo Prefecture, Japan, operated by the West Japan Railway Company (JR West).

Lines

Akashi Station is served by the JR San'yō Main Line, and is located 19.4 kilometers from the terminus of the line at Kobe and 52.52 kilometers from Osaka .

Station layout

The station consists of two elevated island platforms with the station building underneath. Platforms 1 and 2 are for electrified train service and Platform 3 and 4 are for non-electrified trains. The station has a Midori no Madoguchi staffed ticket office.

History

Akashi Station opened on November 1, 1888. With the privatization of the Japan National Railways (JNR) on April 1, 1987, the station came under the aegis of the West Japan Railway Company.

Sanyō Main Line Major railway line in Japan

The San'yō Main Line is a major railway line owned by JR Group companies in western Japan, connecting Kōbe Station and Moji Station, largely paralleling the coast of the Inland Sea, in other words, the southern coast of western Honshu. The San'yō Shinkansen line largely parallels its route. The name Sanyō derived from the ancient region and highway San'yōdō, the road on the sunny (south) side of the mountains.
