Alashankou railway station (Chinese :阿拉山口站; pinyin :Ālāshānkǒu zhàn), also known as Alataw Pass railway station (also spelt Alatau and Ala Tau), is a railway station in Börtala Mongol Autonomous Prefecture of China's Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region.

Located on the Chinese side of the Dzungarian Gate pass through the Dzungarian Alatau mountain range at the 2358.376 km point of Lanxin Railway, it is the last station on the Northern Xinjiang branch of the Lanxin Railway before entering Kazakhstan. For the first twenty-plus years of its history it was the only railway port of entry in Western China; during this time, the amount of international rail freight going through the Alashankou port of entry increased from 160,000 tonnes in 1991 to 15,160,000 tonnes in 2011. [1]

In another report, the tonnes of rail freight crossing the border at Alashankou during the first 10 months of 2011 were reported as 8,921,000, which was said to be a 12.8 % increase over the previous year. The mass of traffic of going from Kazakhstan to China is much higher than from China to Kazakhstan (7,412,000 tonnes vs. 1,509,000 tonnes). The main commodities that went from Kazakhstan to China via Alashankou were iron ore, high-carbon ferrochrome, wheat and steel. Among the goods shipped from China to Kazakhstan, the main groups were steel (in particular, steel pipes), electronics and tomato paste. [2]

There is also a passenger train, Almaty-Ürümqi, that crosses the border at Alashankou. The second railway port of entry on the Sino-Kazakh border, at Khorgas, opened to rail traffic in December 2012. [1]

The Northern Xinjiang railway or Beijiang railway is a railway in Xinjiang, China, between Ürümqi, the regional capital of Xinjiang, and Alashankou on the border with Kazakhstan. The railway is 460 km (290 mi) in length and runs along the northern slope of the Tian Shan mountain range, connecting all major cities and towns of the southern Junggar Basin, including Changji, Hutubi, Manas, Shihezi, Kuytun, Wusu, Bortala (Bole), Jinghe and Alashankou. The line extends the Lanzhou–Xinjiang railway west from Ürümqi to the Turkestan–Siberia railway on the Kazakh border and forms a section of the Trans-Eurasian Railway from Rotterdam to Lianyungang. The line was opened in 1992.

The Jingyihuo railway, short for Jinghe–Yining–Khorgas railway, is the first electrified railway in operation in Xinjiang, China. The line is 286 km in length and connects Jinghe, Yining and Khorgos. The Jingyihuo railway branches from the Northern Xinjiang railway at Jinghe in the Junggar Basin, and heads south through the Tian Shan range into the Ili River Valley. Cities and towns along route include Jinghe, Nilka County, Yining County, Yining, Huocheng County, and Khorgos, on the border with Kazakhstan.

Ürümqi railway station is a station, formerly a small halt called Ergong. Now it is a major transport hub, servicing high-speed and conventional rail in Ürümqi, Xinjiang. It should not be confused with Ürümqi South Railway Station, which was known by the same name from 1962 until 2014, when the new train station was completed. The newer station, being much larger and grander than Ürümqi South, will assume the role of Ürümqi's primary railway station. The Jinghe–Alashankou Expressway (Chinese: 精河-阿拉山口高速公路), commonly referred to as the Jing'a Expressway (Chinese: 精阿高速公路) and designated G3018, is an expressway under construction between Jinghe County and Alashankou in Bortala Mongol Autonomous Prefecture, Xinjiang, China. It will serve as a connection between Alashankou, the site of the Alataw Pass, which serves as a major border crossing between China and Kazakhstan, and the G30 Lianyungang–Khorgas Expressway at Jinghe. The expressway will be 68.66 kilometres (42.66 mi) in length. It will connect to the future G3019 Bole–Alashankou Expressway at about the halfway point, near the Bole railway station on the Northern Xinjiang railway. It is expected to open at the end of 2018.

The Bole–Alashankou Expressway (Chinese: 博乐-阿拉山口高速公路), commonly referred to as the Bo'a Expressway (Chinese: 博阿高速公路) and designated G3019, is an expressway under construction between Jinghe County and Alashankou in the Chinese autonomous region of Xinjiang. It will serve as a connection between Alashankou, which serves as a major border crossing between China and Kazakhstan known as the Alataw Pass, and the county-level city of Bole. The expressway is an auxiliary route of the G30 Lianyungang–Khorgas Expressway.

The border between Afghanistan and China is a 76-kilometre-long (47 mi) boundary, beginning at the tripoint of both countries with Pakistan administrated region of Kashmir (Gilgit-Baltistan), following the watershed along the Mustagh Range, and ending at the tripoint with Tajikistan. This short border is in the far northeast of Afghanistan, distant from much of the country or urban areas, at the end of the Wakhan Corridor. The border is crossed by several mountain passes including Wakhjir Pass in the south and Tegermansu Pass in the north.

Lanzhou–Xinjiang high-speed railway railway line

The Lanzhou–Xinjiang high-speed railway, also known as Lanzhou–Xinjiang Passenger Railway or Lanxin Second Railway, is a high-speed rail in Northwestern China from Lanzhou in Gansu Province to Ürümqi in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region.

The Karamay–Tacheng railway is a branch railway under construction in China's Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region. The 270 km long line starts at Baikouquan Station (百口泉站) on the Kuytun–Beitun railway in Karamay City, and runs to the northwest, passing through the northeastern part of Toli County and Emin County, and terminating in Tacheng City, near the border with Kazakhstan. As of May 24, 2019, tickets for this rail line are already available for purchase, and service is expected to commence on May 30, 2019. According to Chinanews, 3 daily train services will be available, and a train trip to Ürümqi will take 9–10 hours at as little as 90 RMB.

Tegermansu Pass mountain pass between China and Afghanistan

Tegermansu Pass or Tigarman Su Pass is a closed mountain pass on the border between Afghanistan and China in the Hindu Kush or Pamirs mountain range. It is located between the Tegermansu Valley on the eastern end of the Little Pamir and Chalachigu Valley in Xinjiang, China. Historically, it was one of the three routes between China and Wakhan.
