ALTAR Games, originally known as ALTAR interactive until 2005, [3] was a Czech independent video game developer founded in 1997 in Brno. [2] Altar Interactive was one of the major Czech game developers during the early 2000s, [4] best known for their 2001 breakthrough hit Original War , regarded as a cult title in Czechia and Poland, [5] [6] [7] as well as for their 2004 X-COM spiritual successor UFO: Aftermath and its sequels. Altar Interactive's successor Altar Games was a member of IDEA Games, a marketing and commerce supporting association founded in 2005 with Bohemia Interactive and Black Element Software. [8]

Legacy

On 30 September 2010, Altar Games was acquired by fellow IDEA Games (Independent Developers Association) member Bohemia Interactive. [9] Bohemia promised that the acquired companies, including Altar, will continue to operate individually. [10] Former Altar has become Bohemia's Brno studio, working first on ArmA 3 . [11] [12] In 2017, Bohemia announced a sequel to Altar's cult classic Original War . [13]

Altar Interactive founder Martin Klíma had earlier left to produce Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising for Codemasters in 2008, [14] and then co-founded the independent video game developer Warhorse Studios in 2011. [15] Ex-Altar Interactive lead artist and creative director Tomáš Kučerovský (Original War, UFO: Aftermath ) became a successful comic book author. [16] Original War lead designer Vladimír Chvátil, who too had left back in 2005 during the breakup of the original Altar team following the cancellation of their ambitious RPG project Vision, [17] became an acclaimed board game designer who founded his own company Czech Games Edition, developing also mobile game versions.

The video game industry in the Czech Republic has produced numerous globally successful video games such as Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis and the subsequent ArmA series, the Mafia series, Truck Simulator series, Kingdom Come: Deliverance, the Samorost series and others. There were 300–400 video game developers and around 30 video game companies focusing on video game development in 2014. In 2017 it was 1,100 developers and 47 companies. Video games are also considered by some experts to be the country's biggest cultural export. The video game industry did not enjoy a good reputation and was unsupported by the state until 2013, when the Ministry of Industry and Trade started to seek ways to kickstart the economy. By 2014, programs were planned to support the video game industry. Another problem is a lack of video game development specialization at any university.
