Amakusa (天草郡, Amakusa-gun) is a district located in Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan.
Following the March 27, 2006 Amakusa merger the district consists of the single town of Reihoku. After the merger, the district has an estimated population of 9,105 and a density of 135.77 persons per km2. The total area is 67.06 km2.

Amakusa Airfield (天草飛行場) is an airport 2.3 NM northwest of Amakusa, Kumamoto, Japan, on the Amakusa Islands in Japan. Locals often refer to it as Amakusa Airport. It is on the northern side of the Amakusa Islands, northwest of Amakusa city. It is used by only one airline, Amakusa Airlines, which is based there.
Shimoshima is the largest island in the Amakusa archipelago. Its coasts are washed by Ariake Sea, Amakusa-nada sea, East China Sea and Yatsushiro Sea. Most of Shimoshima Island is administered as part of Amakusa city, with 67 km2 patch on north-west coast belonging to the town of Reihoku. The island's highest peak is Mount Tenjiku 538.4 m (1,766 ft).
Ferry from Itsuwa Oniike on the north of the Amakusa Peninsular to Kuchinotsu at the southern tip of the Shimabara Peninsula is run by the Shimbara Railway Co. Services operate frequently each day.
