Annie Chidzira Muluzi (18 March 1952 –28 December 2021) [1] was First Lady of Malawi and wife of Bakili Muluzi. [2] As first lady she was the founder of the Freedom Foundation Trust. She died on 28 December 2021 in Nairobi Kenya. [3]
Muluzi had two children from her marriage with Bakili Muluzi,namely Austin Atupele Muluzi [4] and Esmie Atweni Muluzi Malisita. The couple lived in a polygamous marriage arrangement as practiced by Islamic custom and Muluzi was also married to Patricia Shanil Muluzi from 1989. [5] On 15 March 1999,Muluzi announced officially the separation from her after 30 years of marriage. He then re-married Patricia Shanil Muluzi in a formal ceremony to mark her new position as the official first lady. Up until their separation in March 1999,Muluzi lived with Anne in the State House in Blantyre. [6] Muluzi's second wife,Patricia Muluzi,resided at another of Muluzi's official residences in the former colonial capital of Zomba. [7]
Her first born daughter,Esme Atweni Muluzi Malisita,died after lightning struck her on December 12,2016. She was pronounced dead at Mwaiwathu Private Hospital. [8] Annie Muluzi died from cancer on 28 December 2021. [9]
Elson Bakili Muluzi is a Malawian politician who was the first freely elected president of Malawi from 1994 to 2004. He was also chairman of the United Democratic Front (UDF) until 2009. He succeeded Hastings Kamuzu Banda as Malawi's president. He also served in Banda's cabinet as minister without portfolio,before retiring in 1980.

Justin Chimera Malewezi was a Malawian politician and a Member of Parliament for Ntchisi North in the Central Region of Malawi. He was Vice-President of Malawi from 1994 to 2004. Malewezi quit the United Democratic Front in 2004 and eventually represented the People's Progressive Movement in the 2004 general election,in which he garnered 2.5% of the total national vote.
General elections were held in Malawi on 19 May 2009. Incumbent President Bingu wa Mutharika ran for re-election;his main opponent was John Tembo,the president of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP). Five other candidates also ran. The election was won by Mutharika,who was re-elected to the Presidency with around two-thirds of the vote. Mutharika's DPP also won a strong parliamentary majority.

Subsequently,he served as Minister of Home Affairs and Internal Security in 2015,and then Minister of Lands,Housing and Urban Development in 2015. He is currently Minister of Health. He is the son of the former president Bakili Muluzi.

Vera Mlangazua Chirwa is a Malawian born lawyer and human and civil rights activist. She was Malawi's first female lawyer and a founding member of the Malawi Congress Party and the Nyasaland African Women's League. She fought for multiparty democratic rule in Malawi and was charged with treason,tried and sentenced to death by President Kamuzu Banda. She spent 12 years on death row. She was married to lawyer Orton Chirwa,Malawian Minister of Justice and Attorney General,who later died in prison.

Although the couple had been married in 1987 and when Muluzi was running for Presidency,she lived secretly and out of the public eye. After Bakili Muluzi became president in 1994,she lived in a presidential residence near Zomba. She made her first public appearance a day before the wedding.

Twaibumohamedi John Twaibu Sangala was a Malawian cabinet Minister and one of the Mwanza four. He was from Dedza district Traditional Authority Tambala. The function was organised by the then ruling party UNITED DEMOCRATIC FRONT (UDF) under the leadership of Bakili Muluzi,the first democratically elected president in Malawi He was the Minister of Health for Malawi. He died in a mysterious death in 1983 together with two other cabinet ministers Aaron Gadama and Dick Matenje–and Member of Parliament David Chiwanga. Their deaths were ruled as a 'traffic accident' by the Kamuzu Banda regime.
Maximiano Mcwilliam Lunguzi was an Inspector General of Police in Malawi. He was removed from his post by President Bakili Muluzi and reassigned as a diplomat without an explanation in a move that was challenged by the court and ruled unconstitutional. He was charged with conspiracy to commit murder together with John Tembo,Cecilia Kadzamira but was acquitted.
Capital punishment in Malawi is a legal punishment for certain crimes. The country abolished the death penalty by a Malawian Supreme Court ruling in 2021,but it was soon reinstated. However,the country is currently under a death penalty moratorium,which has been in place since the latest execution in 1992.
