Area code 55 serves Mexico City and its metropolitan area. The area code was created in 2002 as a result of the consolidation of area codes and the realignment of numbering. The consolidation mandated by the Plan Nacional de Numeracion (PNN), assigned area codes based on geography, and took place during the process of phone numbering restructure in Mexico. The process objective was to alleviate saturation of existing area codes and consisted of progressively transferring numbers from the area code to the local number.
Mexico City, or the City of Mexico, is the capital of Mexico and the most populous city in North America. It is one of the most important cultural and financial centres in the Americas. It is located in the Valley of Mexico, a large valley in the high plateaus in the center of Mexico, at an altitude of 2,240 meters (7,350 ft). The city has 16 boroughs.
The area code 55 covers an extensive surface and it is close to exhaustion with approximately 72,960,518 [1] numbers assigned to this area code as of November 2018. A new overlaying area code has been assigned to Mexico City to address this issue. The new area code is 56.
Area code 56 serves Mexico City and its metropolitan area. The area code was assigned in October 2018 to alleviate saturation of area code 55. Area code 56 is an overlay of area code 55 covering the same area with approximately 2,200,000 numbers assigned to this area code as of November 2018.

The North American Numbering Plan (NANP) is a telephone numbering plan that encompasses twenty-five distinct regions in twenty countries primarily in North America, including the Caribbean. Some North American countries, most notably Mexico, do not participate in the NANP.
A telephone numbering plan is a type of numbering scheme used in telecommunication to assign telephone numbers to subscriber telephones or other telephony endpoints. Telephone numbers are the addresses of participants in a telephone network, reachable by a system of destination code routing. Telephone numbering plans are defined in each of administrative regions of the public switched telephone network (PSTN) and they are also present in private telephone networks. For public number systems, geographic location plays a role in the sequence of numbers assigned to each telephone subscriber.
Telephone numbers in the United Kingdom are administered by the UK government's Office of Communications (Ofcom). For this purpose Ofcom established a telephone numbering plan, known as the National Telephone Numbering Plan, which is the system for assigning telephone numbers to subscriber stations.
In telecommunications, an overlay plan is a telephone numbering plan that assigns multiple area codes to a geographic numbering plan area (NPA). Overlaying area codes is practiced in the territories belonging to the North American Numbering Plan (NANP).
In Argentina, area codes are two, three, or four digits long. Local customer numbers are six to eight figures long. The total number of digits is ten, for example, phone number (11) 1234-5678 for Buenos Aires is made up of a 2-digit area code number and an 8-digit subscriber's number, while (383) 123-4567 would be an example of a Catamarca number.
Number pooling is a method of reallocating telephony numbering space in the North American Numbering Plan, primarily in growth areas in the United States.
Numbers on the Irish Telephone Numbering Plan are regulated and assigned to operators by ComReg.
Area codes 204 and 431 are the North American telephone area codes for the Canadian province of Manitoba, encompassing the province. 204 is one of the original 86 area codes assigned in 1947 in the contiguous United States and the then-nine-province extent of Canada.
Telephone numbers in Malaysia are regulated by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).
Telephone numbers in the Philippines follow an open telephone numbering plan and an open dial plan. Both plans are regulated by the National Telecommunications Commission, an attached agency under the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT).
Telephone numbers in Italy are defined by a telephone numbering plan that is organized by types of services. Landline numbers and mobile phone numbers are easily recognizable: the former start with 0 and the latter start with 3. Other initial digits denote other services, such as emergency and toll-free numbers.
The regulation of telephone numbers in Germany is the responsibility of the Federal Network Agency of the German government. The agency has a mandate to telecommunications in Germany and other infrastructure systems.
The national conventions for writing telephone numbers vary by country. While international standards exist in the form of the International Telecommunication Union sector ITU-T issued recommendation E.123, national telephone numbering plans define the format and length of telephone numbers assigned to telephones.
Uruguay's calling code is +598. Since 2010, national long distance calling was eliminated, thus there are no area codes in each city.
A telephone number is a sequence of digits assigned to a fixed-line telephone subscriber station connected to a telephone line or to a wireless electronic telephony device, such as a radio telephone or a mobile telephone, or to other devices for data transmission via the public switched telephone network (PSTN) or other public and private networks.
Ranges for fictitious telephone numbers are common in most telephone numbering plans. One of the main reasons these ranges exist is to avoid accidentally using real phone numbers in movies and television programmes because viewers frequently call the numbers used. In North America, the area served by the North American Numbering Plan (NANPA) system of area codes, fictitious telephone numbers are usually of the form (XXX) 555-xxxx. The use of 555 numbers in fiction, however, led a desire to assign some of them in the real world, and some of them are no longer suitable for use in fiction. Other areas have different fictitious telephone numbers.
Area code 618 serves the municipality of Durango in the State of Durango. The area code was created in 2002 as a result of the consolidation of location specific area codes 181, 182, and 183. The consolidation, mandated by the Plan Nacional de Numeracion (PNN), assigned area codes based on geography, and took place during the process of phone numbering restructure in Mexico. The process objective was to alleviate saturation of existing area codes, and consisted of progressively transferring numbers from the area code to the local number. The local area code went from 181 to 18 and lastly to 1, while at the same time the local number length increased from 5 to 7 digits.
Area code 674 serves several municipalities in the western highlands in the State of Durango. The area code was created in 2002 as a result of the consolidation of location specific area codes 181, 182 and 183. The local area code went from 186 and 187 to 1, at the same time, the local number length increased from 5 to 7 digits. In the process, the area code went from designating a city or town to designating a geographical area. The 674 area code is centered in Santiago Papasquiaro. The original code for the city of Santiago Papasquiaro was 186. A total of 206,286 numbers have been assigned to this area code as of November 2018.
