The Arquivo Nacional de Cabo Verde (acronym: ANCV) is the national archive of Cape Verde. It is located in the capital city of Praia, on Avenida Combatentes da Liberdade da Patria, in the subdivision of Chã de Areia. It is housed in the former customs building, [1] that was built in 1878. [2]

Cape Verde or Cabo Verde, officially the Republic of Cabo Verde, is an island country spanning an archipelago of 10 volcanic islands in the central Atlantic Ocean. It forms part of the Macaronesia ecoregion, along with the Azores, Canary Islands, Madeira, and the Savage Isles. In ancient times these islands were referred to as "the Islands of the Blessed" or the "Fortunate Isles". Located 570 kilometres (350 mi) west of the Cape Verde Peninsula off the coast of Northwest Africa, the islands cover a combined area of slightly over 4,000 square kilometres (1,500 sq mi).

Praia, is the capital and largest city of Cape Verde, an island nation in the Atlantic Ocean west of Senegal. It lies on the southern coast of Santiago island in the Sotavento Islands group. It is the island's ferry port and is home to one of the nation's four international airports. The city centre is known as Plateau due to its location on a small plateau.

Chã de Areia Neighbourhood in Praia, Santiago Island, Cape Verde

Chã de Areia is a subdivision of the city of Praia in the island of Santiago, Cape Verde. Its population was 247 at the 2010 census. It is situated south and west of the city centre. Adjacent neighbourhoods include Plateau to the northeast, Achadinha to the north, Várzea to the west, Achada Santo António to the southwest and Prainha to the south. Its main streets are Avenida Combatentes da Liberdade da Patria and Avenida Cidade de Lisboa. Points of interest in Chã de Areia include the beach of Gamboa, the old port of Praia and the Cape Verdean National Archives, housed in the former customs building.

The Arquivo Histórico Nacional was created on December 31, 1988 under the decree number 128/88, with the purpose of preserving, organizing and disseminating the national archival heritage. On December 9, 2012, the government of Cape Verde approved a new structure of the Ministry of Culture, and the Arquivo Histórico Nacional became the "Arquivo Nacional de Cabo Verde". [1] It contains about 6,000 meters of books of records and separate documents produced by the Central Administration, Municipality Councils, Churches, Registries and Notaries and by the Courts. [1]

The library maintains the National Bibliography, contains the country's historical archives and the theses and dissertation bank and is a legal deposit. The Radiotelevisão Caboverdiana is Cape Verde's first radio and television station broadcasting local programs from Cape Verde, Portugal and Brazil as well as the rest of the world especially France. It is a publicly owned company and enterprise and is located in the Capeverdean capital city of Praia, in the southern part in the middle of Achada Santo António RTC also has a few buildings, it also has offices in São Vicente, Sal, São Filipe on Fogo Island and Assomada in Santa Catarina. The building size is very small, only like local affiliates in North America as well as Latin America, Australia and Europe. Cimboa

The cimboa, also known as the cimbó[sĩˈbɔ], is a musical instrument from Cape Verde. It is a bowed chordophone that was traditionally used to be played with the batuque dances.

The University of Cape Verde is the only public university of Cape Verde. The main campus is in Palmarejo, Praia, but there are also institutes in Mindelo, Assomada and São Jorge dos Órgãos. It has over 5000 students. A new campus for Uni-CV is under construction in Palmarejo, financed by the Chinese government. It should be completed by July 2020. It will have capacity for 4,890 students and 476 professors, with a library, dorms, cafeterias and sports facilities. It will have 61 class rooms, five auditoriums with a capacity of 150 seats, eight computer rooms, eight reading rooms and 34 laboratories.

Education in Cape Verde

Primary school education in Cape Verde is mandatory between the ages of 6 and 14 years and free for children ages 6 to 12. In 1997, the gross primary enrollment rate was 148.8 percent. Primary school attendance rates were unavailable for Cape Verde as of 2001. While enrollment rates indicate a level of commitment to education, they do not always reflect children’s participation in school. Textbooks have been made available to 90 percent of school children, and 90 percent of the teachers have attended in-service teacher training. Its literacy rate as of 2010 ranges from 75 to 80% and being the highest in the whole of West Africa south of the Sahara.

Raúl Pires Ferreira Chaves was a Portuguese civil engineer and inventor. A graduate of the Instituto Superior Técnico of Lisbon, he lived and primarily worked in Portugal, Portuguese Cape Verde and Portuguese Guinea.

Quartel Jaime Mota

Quartel Jaime Mota is a historical building in the historic city centre (Plateau) of Praia, Cape Verde. It is situated at the southern end of Avenida Andrade Corvo, near the Presidential Palace of Cape Verde. It was built between 1823 and 1826 as a military barracks. The present structure in Neo-Manueline style dates from 1872, and was further expanded and modified in the late 19th and early 20th century. After independence, it was named after Jaime Mota, a Cape Verdean militant of PAIGC who was killed in Portuguese Guinea.

Museu Etnográfico da Praia is an ethnographic museum in the Cape Verdean capital of Praia on the island of Santiago. It is located at 45 Rua 5 de Julho, in the historic part of the city, the Plateau. The museum was opened in November 1997 and is located in a 19th century building. The museum contains a selection of objects that represent the traditional uses and customs of the Cape Verdean people.

Plateau is the historic centre of the capital city of Praia in the island of Santiago, Cape Verde. It gets its name because it is situated on a plateau overlooking the port of Praia. Its average elevation is 37 meters above sea level. The population of Plateau was 1,019 at the 2010 census. Many public buildings are situated in Plateau, notably the Presidential Palace, the cathedral, the city hall and the Ethnographic Museum.

Praia Harbor

Praia Harbor is the port of the city of Praia in the southern part of the island of Santiago, Cape Verde. It is situated in a natural bay of the Atlantic Ocean. Since the latest modernization in 2014, it has 2 long quays, 3 shorter quays, a quay for fishing boats with fish processing installations, 2 container parks, 2 roll-on/roll-off ramps and a passenger terminal. The total length of the quays is 863 m, and the maximum depth is 13.5 m. The port of Praia played an important role in the colonization of Africa and South America by the Portuguese. With 817,845 metric tonnes of cargo and 85,518 passengers handled (2017), it is the second busiest port of Cape Verde, after Porto Grande (Mindelo).

Avenida Cidade de Lisboa

Avenida Cidade de Lisboa is an avenue west of the center of Praia, Santiago island, Cape Verde. It runs along the neighbourhoods of Várzea, Achadinha and Chã de Areia. It is one of the major arterial roads of the city. The street is named for Praia's town twinning with the city of Lisbon, Portugal. It runs south to north, west of the Plateau. The annual carnival parade takes place on Avenida Cidade de Lisboa.

Liceu Domingos Ramos

Liceu Domingos Ramos is a public secondary school in the northern part of the city centre (Plateau) of Praia, Cape Verde. As of 2015, it has 2,300 students, 63 classes and 110 teachers. It was established as Liceu Adriano Moreira in 1960. In 1975, at the independence of Cape Verde, it was renamed Liceu Domingos Ramos.

The National Auditorium is a public building on Av. Cidade de Lisboa in Praia, capital of Cape Verde, completed in 2015. It was constructed with state investment by China. It is on the west side of the National Library of Cape Verde.
