Arthur Henry Cole

Arthur Henry Cole (28 June 1780 – 16 June 1844) was an Anglo-Irish politician and civil servant who sat in the British House of Commons for Enniskillen from 1828 to 1844. [1]

Cole was the fourth son of William Cole, 1st Earl of Enniskillen (died 1803), and Anne, daughter of Galbraith Lowry-Corry, Irish MP for County Tyrone and sister of Armar Lowry-Corry, 1st Earl Belmore. [1] [2] He was the younger brother of John Cole, 2nd Earl of Enniskillen, Sir Galbraith Lowry Cole, and Rev. William Cole. He was educated at Trinity College Dublin. [3]

Cole arrived in British India in 1802 as part of the East India Company, and was described by Lord Cornwallis as "a very fine lad, and modest, and well behaved". He was appointed the British Resident in Mysore in 1812, serving for about 15 years before returning home to start his political career. Cole's Park and Cole's Road in Fraser Town, Bangalore are named after him. [4] He was also influential in the construction of an Anglican church, St. Bartholomew's Church, in Mysore. [5] [6]

He was elected as Member of Parliament for the Conservative Party in an 1828 by-election, following the resignation of his brother-in-law Richard Magenis. He resigned from Parliament on 4 June 1844 because of ill health, and died 12 days later at his residence in Manchester Square, Marylebone, just shy of his 64th birthday. [7] He was succeeded by his nephew Henry Arthur Cole. [1]

He had already been created Baron Belmore, of Castle Coole in County Fermanagh, in 1781 and Viscount Belmore in 1789, also in the Peerage of Ireland. Born Armar Lowry, he was the son of Galbraith Lowry, Member of the Irish House of Commons for County Tyrone, and his wife Sarah, daughter of Colonel John Corry. In 1774, he assumed by Royal licence the additional surname of Corry. He was succeeded by his eldest son, the second Earl. He represented County Tyrone in both the Irish and British House of Commons, sat in the House of Lords as an Irish Representative Peer from 1819 to 1841, and served as Governor of Jamaica from 1828 to 1832.

It was established in 1906 and is named after Stuart Mitford Fraser (1864–1963), who was the tutor and guardian of Krishna Raja Wadiyar IV, Maharaja of Mysore. Pulakeshi Nagara was established to de-congest the growing Bangalore Civil and Military Station. The foundation of Pulakeshi Nagara was laid in August 1910 by Mrs. F J Richards, with a commemorative plaque on the corner of Coles Road and Mosque Road. Pulakeshi Nagara is a residential and commercial suburb, the prominent roads being Promenade Road, Netaji Road, Madhavraya Mudaliar Road, Haines Road, Spencer Road, Wheeler Road, Mosque Road, etc. The suburb is known for its communal harmony with Hindus, Muslims and Christians living side by side in peace. Before being known as Fraser Town, the suburb was called Mootocherry by the locals. In 1988, the BBMP renamed Fraser Town as Pulakeshi Nagara, after Pulakeshin II who ruled the Deccan in the 7th century.
