The Ashraf (Arabic : أشراف, romanized: ‘āshrāf) are persons descended (or claiming descent) from Muhammad by way of his daughter Fatimah. The word with long ā in the second system, is the plural of sharīf "noble", from sharafa "to be highborn", but ašhraf ( أشرف ), with short a, is the elative of sharīf meaning "very noble", "nobler", "noblest".
Like the Sadah (plural of Sayyid), Ashraf often take their names from ancestry from Muhammad, Fatima and Ali and have in many Muslim societies Ashraf evolved into an honorific denoting "master" or "gentry". More precisely, the Ashraf are descendants of Ali's elder son, Hassan, and the Sadah those of Ali's younger son Husayn.
During the Abbasid period, the term was applied to all Ahl al-Bayt, basically Muhammad's own family, including, for example, the descendants of Muhammad ibn al-Hanafiyya, of Ali's second wife and of the Hashemites. During the Fatimid Dynasty, the use of the term was restricted to the descendants of Hasan (the Hasanids) and Husayn (the Husaynids) only. This restriction remained in force even after Egypt became Sunni again under the Ayyubids.
Also, the Ashraf tribes exist along countries including Somalia, Sudan and Ethiopia. There are 2 to 3 sub-categories of them also, which usually have Sharif in their middle or surname. They are originally from Yemen and have in the recent generations migrated to Somalia due to its wealth and profitable businesses at the time, before the civil war broke out.
Many tribes couldn't distinguish between Ashraf and Sadah. Sadah, Ashraf and Sayyid became a Sharif's title. The distinction between Hasani Ashraf and Husayni Ashraf is not known. As late as the beginning of the nineteenth century, Sayyid had no meaning other than Sharif. Abdurrahman al-Gabarti felt compelled to explain that a certain As-Sayyid Ali Al-Qhabtan was a Mamluk and not a Sharif, as might have been mistakenly inferred from his title. The title in this case, meaning a Mamluk master, originated from the Maghribi usage of "Sidi", which was equivalent in meaning to Emir or Shaikh.
In modern usage, Sayyid has lost its religious significance and means simply "Mister".
Well aware of their distinguished descent, the Ashraf tribes kept genealogical records and were socially acknowledged as a religious elite. Inevitably, doubts arose concerning the descent of many claimants to the title. Al-Gabarti once commented of one person: "He is one of the Ashraf of true genealogy. Sayyid Muhammad Murtada verified his genealogy."
One concept during record keeping was the term of Najeeb al-Tarfayn or "Noble on both sides". This was applied to those Ashraf who have both Imams Hassan and Hussain in Patrilineal and Matrilineal lineages. Although this concept has been debated on by many Sunni and Shia scholars however it has generally been agreed that Prophet Muhammad had stated in a Hadeeth that his true descendant Al Mahdi would be a Najeeb AlTarfayn who would deliver the Muslims of the last age out of their misery from the clutches of the Dajjal or Antichrist. Such Ashraf carry the titles "Sayyid AlShareef", "Sayyidayn", "Shareefayn" or "Sheikh Assayyid" before their names. They also kept two white colored daggers as opposed to a single white one by other Ashraf denoting their superior nobility among the Ashraf.
In South Asia, ashraf designates a major social-status group within the greater Muslim community, namely all Muslims of foreign ancestry.[ which? ] This includes Sayyids, Shaikhs and Arain as well as other Muslims of "foreign" ancestry, such as Mughals.
The Chishtī Order is a Sunni Sufi order within the mystic Sufi tradition of Islam. It began in Chisht, a small town near Herat, Afghanistan, about 930 CE. The Chishti Order is known for its emphasis on love, tolerance, and openness. Chishti Sharif is name of village in Afghanistan near Iran border.
Zayd ibn ʿAlī, also spelled Zaid, was the son of Ali ibn Husayn, and great-grandson of Ali. He led an unsuccessful revolt against the Umayyad Caliphate, in which he died. The event gave rise to the Zaidiyyah sect of Shia Islam, which holds him as the next Imam after Ali ibn Husayn. In contrast, his elder half-brother Muhammad al-Baqir is seen as the next Imam of the Twelver and Isma'ili Shias. Nevertheless, he is considered an important revolutionary figure by Shias and a martyr (shaheed) by all schools of Islam, Sunnis and Shias. The calling for revenge for his death, and for the brutal display of his body, contributed to the Abbasid Revolution.
Banū Hāshim is the clan of the Quraysh tribe, to which the Islamic prophet Muhammad belonged; his great-grandfather was Hashim ibn Abd Manaf, after whom the clan is named. Members of this clan are referred to as Hashemites or Al-hashimi. Descendants of Muhammad usually carry the titles Sayyid, Syed, Hashimi, Al-Hashmi‚ Sayed and Sharif, or the Ashraf clan.
Sayyid is an honorific title denoting people accepted as descendants of the Islamic prophet Muhammad and his cousin and son-in-law Ali through his grandsons, Hasan ibn Ali and Husayn ibn Ali, sons of Muhammad's daughter Fatimah and Ali.

Abu 'l-Ḥasan ʿAlī b. ʿUthmān b. ʿAlī al-Ghaznawī al-Jullābī al-Hujwīrī, known as ʿAlī al-Hujwīrī or al-Hujwīrī for short, or reverentially as Shaykh Syed ʿAlī al-Hujwīrī or as Dātā Ganj Bakhsh by Muslims of the Indian subcontinent, was an 11th-century Persian Sunni Muslim mystic, theologian, and preacher from Ghazna, who became famous for composing the Kashf al-maḥjūb, which is considered the "earliest formal treatise" on Sufism in Persian. Ali Hujwiri is believed to have contributed "significantly" to the spread of Islam in South Asia through his preaching, with one historian describing him as "one of the most important figures to have spread Islam in the Indian subcontinent."
The Alids are an Arab community, found predominantly in the Arab world and the South Asian countries. Alids are the one who were accepted as the descendants of Caliph Ali ibn Abi Talib, cousin and son-in-law of Islamic prophet Muhammad, through all his wives.
The Ziyadid dynasty was a Muslim dynasty that ruled western Yemen from 819 until 1018 from the capital city of Zabid. It was the first dynastic regime to wield power over the Yemeni lowland after the introduction of Islam in about 630.
Alī ibn Abī Ṭālib was an early Islamic leader. Ali is revered by Sunni Muslims as the fourth Rightly Guided Caliphs, and as a foremost religious authority on the Qur'an and Fiqh. Shi'a Muslims consider him the First Imam appointed by the Islamic prophet Muhammad and the first rightful caliph. Ali was the cousin of Muhammad, and after marriage to Fatimah he also became Muhammad's son-in-law. His descendants through Fatimah are revered today by both Shia and Sunnis as Sayyids.
In Islamic tradition, Ahl al Bayt primarily refers to the family of the Islamic prophet Muhammad, and, to a lesser extent, his ancestor Abraham. In Shia Islam, the Ahl al-Bayt are central to Islam and interpreters of the Quran. Shiites believe that they consist of Muhammad; his daughter, Fatimah; his son-in-law, Ali; and their children, Hasan and Husayn, known collectively as the Ahl al-Kisa. An Imāmzādeh refers to an immediate descendant of a Shi'i Imam in the Persian language. This Persian term is also used in Urdu and Azeri.
Silsila is an Arabic word meaning chain, link, connection often used in various senses of lineage. In particular, it may be translated as "(religious) order" or "spiritual genealogy" where one Sufi Master transfers his khilfat to his spiritual descendant. In Urdu, Silsila means saga.
Khadijah bint Khuwaylid, the first wife of the Islamic prophet Muhammad, had six children. Some Shias dispute whether all of the children were born in her marriage to Muhammad, or if three of the four daughters were actually the daughters of Halah, her sister.
The Otaibah is a tribe originating in Saudi Arabia. which is distributed throughout Saudi Arabia and the Middle East. The Otaibah are descended from the Bedouin. They trace back to the Mudar family and belong to the Qays ʿAylān confederacy through its previous name, Hawazin.
The Verse of Purification is the 33rd verse (ayah) of Al-Aḥzāb in the Qur'an (Q33:33). The verse has special importance for Shia Muslims due to giving information about Ahl al-Bayt of Muhammad. Shiite reportedly believe it to designate the "People of the House" as being Ismah, infallible. Within Sunni Islam this viewpoint is seen as either rejected or partially supported such as the case of Sufism. Some verses refer to Muhammad's wives.
Indo-Arabs are people with Arab origins who have over a long period of time, settled in the Indian Subcontinent. There has been extensive trade and cultural links between India and the Arab world spanning several centuries. The west coast region of India, especially Malabar and Konkan coasts were active trading hubs, where Arab merchants frequently used to visit on their way to Sri Lanka and South East Asia. Over a span of several centuries, migrants from different Arabian nations emigrated to various regions and kingdoms of the Indian subcontinent as merchants, missionaries and through intermarriages.
Azmatkhan al-Husayni, also spelled Azmat Khan, al-Azhamatkhan or al-Azhamat Chan are a family originating in Hadhramaut. They trace their lineage to Sayyid Abd al-Malik Azmatkhan ibn Alawi Ammul Faqih, a descendant of Husayn ibn Ali. Sayyid Abd al-Malik emigrated from Hadhramaut to India in 14th century AD, earlier than other emigrations from Hadhramaut.
Sharif ul-Hashim was the regal name of Sayyed walShareef Abubakar Abirin AlHashmi. He was an Arab-Muslim explorer and the founder of the Sultanate of Sulu. He assumed the political and spiritual leadership of the realm, and was given the title Sultan, and was also the first Sultan of Sulu.
Sharif Abu Tayeb Daoud bin Abdul Rahman bin Abi Al-Fatik Abdullah bin Dawood bin Suleiman took the command of Mecca in 403 AH - 1012 AD, and the first of the ruling of the Banu Hashim that ruled Mecca in 403 - 1012 AD, and continued to rule in 1039, where Then he founded the Mikhlaf al-Sulaymani, and then ruled the difference and waived the rule of Hijaz to his brother Sharif Mohammed bin Abdul Rahman bin Abi Al-Fatak, and his descendants today: Al-Fakher, Abu Omreen, Al-Mahdi and Al-Hamzah.
Sharīf al-Dīn Abu Ali Muḥammad ibn Sana' al-Mulk As'ad ibn Ali al-Jawwani better known as Al-Jawwani, was a 12th-century Arab Egyptian historian and genealogist in Fatimid Egypt.
