Asoka Mehta (24 October 1911,Bhavnagar –10 December 1984,New Delhi) was an Indian freedom fighter and socialist politician. He helped organize the socialist wing Congress Socialist Party of the Indian National Congress,along with Rambriksh Benipuri,Jaya Prakash Narayan,and was heavily involved in the politics and government of the city of Bombay.
Ashok Mehta was born in Bhavnagar on 24 October 1911 to Ranjitram Mehta,a Gujarati writer. He completed his primary education from Ahmedabad and Sholapur. He graduated from Bombay University in 1931 where he was introduced to Swadeshi Movement. [1] [2] [3]
He was imprisoned in 1932 for participating in Civil Disobedience Movement. Mehta was active participant during the Quit India movement in 1942 and was arrested by the British. He was sentenced to rigorous imprisonment five times. [3] [4]
After India's independence,he helped organize trade unions in Bombay and was one of the founders of INTUC. [5]
He also served as Mayor of Bombay city from 1946 to 1947. Mehta retired from active politics in the early 1950s,and wrote several books on his experiences,on India's freedom struggle,and on the importance of socialist reforms. In 1950,he was elected as the president of the eighth session of Socialist Party. [3]
Ashoka Mehta was a founder member of Socialist Party and when,in September 1952,the Kisan Mazdoor Praja Party and the Socialist Party merged to form the Praja Socialist Party (PSP) in which the major cementing role was played by Ram Manohar Lohia and Mehta, [6] Asoka Mehta was appointed the General Secretary of the Praja Socialist Party (PSP) and later served as the President of the party from the year 1959 to 1963. He became new party's general secretary. [7] He was Praja Socialist Party's president during 1959-1963.
He was a founding member of the first Governing Body of National Council of Applied Economic Research [8] in New Delhi,India’s first independent economic policy institute,established in 1956. In 1963,he served as deputy chairman of the Planning Commission. He also served as a Union Minister after 1964. [3] He agreed to be appointed the Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission.
He joined Indian National Congress in 1964,after his expulsion from Praja Socialist Party. After Congress split in 1969 and the faction Congress (I) was led by Indira Gandhi,Mehta was part of the Congress (O) faction.
He was a member of 1st and 2nd Lok Sabha during 1954-1957 and 1957-1962. He was elected third time for 4th Lok Sabha from Bhandara. [9] He was a member of Rajya Sabha from 3 April 1966 to 26 February 1967. [10] [3]
He was arrested during the Emergency on 26 June 1975 and detained in Rohtak Jail,Haryana. [4]
In 1977 he was the Chairman of Ashok Mehta Committee under the Janata government.
He died in New Delhi on 10 December 1984. [11]

Madhu Limaye,full name:Madhukar Ramchandra Limaye,was an Indian socialist essayist and activist,particularly active in the 1970s. A follower of Ram Manohar Lohia and a fellow-traveller of George Fernandes,he was active in the Janata government that gained power at the Centre following the Emergency. He,with Raj Narain and Krishan Kant was also responsible for the collapse of the Morarji Desai-led Janata government installed by that coalition,by insisting that no member of the Janata Party could simultaneously be a member of an alternative social or political organisation. This attack on dual membership was directed specifically at members of the Janata Party who had been members of the Jan Sangh,and continued to be members of the right-wing Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS),the Jan Sangh's ideological parent. The issue led to fall of the Janata government in 1979,and the destruction of the Janata coalition.
Raj Narain was an Indian freedom fighter and politician. He won in a famous electoral malpractice case against the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi,which led to her disqualification and imposition of Emergency in India in 1975. He defeated Indira Gandhi during the 1977 Lok Sabha elections.

He served as a member of Panel of Chairman during Third Lok Sabha and Committee on Public Undertakings from 1964 to 1967. He was also one of the Governors of Khoj Parishad,a socio-economic research institute,from 1948 to 1951. Dwivedy was a member of the Indian delegation to the first session of the Asian Socialist Conference,Rangoon,and to the United States of America. Sri Dwivedy entered into the Parliament in 1952 as the member of the Rajya Sabha and continued in the capacity till 1956. In 1957 he was elected to the Lok Sabha where he continued for the successive terms until 1970. As a crusader against political corruption he made his mark as a great parliamentarian. Even Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru,the Prime Minister of India,had a great regard for Sri Dwivedy and had deputed him to various foreign countries in the delegation with the parliamentarians. It was because of his vehement opposition and criticism during China (Sino) Indian War-1962,V.K. Krishna Menon was forced to resign. He was the leader of the Praja Socialist Party in the Parliament from 1962 to 1970. Even after the death of Pt. Nehru he enjoyed the said status and respect as stalwart parliamentarian during the resume of Lal Bahadur Shastri and Mrs Indira Gandhi. His drive against corruption also forced the State Ministry of Odisha headed by Biren Mitra to resign. As a parliamentarian he enjoyed the confidence of all front line leaders like Morarji Desai,Prof. Madhu Dandavate,Nath Pai,Ram Monohr Lohia,Ashok Mehta,Aruna Saif Ali and many others.
