Atishi Marlena Singh, [4] also known as Atishi Singh or Atishi Marlena or Atishi [5] is an Indian politician,political activist and MLA from Kalkaji,Delhi. [6] She is a member of the Political Affairs Committee of Aam Aadmi Party and currently serving as Minister of Education,P.W.D,Culture and Tourism in the Delhi Government. She served as Advisor to the Former Deputy Chief Minister of Delhi,Manish Sisodia,primarily on education,from July 2015 to 17 April 2018.
Atishi was born to Delhi University professors Vijay Singh and Tripta Wahi on 8 June 1981 in a family of Punjabi background. [7] [8] She was given the middle name 'Marlena' by her parents. According to her party,the name is a portmanteau of Marx and Lenin. [7] In 2018,right before the national elections,she chose to use "Atishi" as her name,dropping her surname from daily use,since she wanted people to focus on her work rather than her lineage. [9] [10]
After being raised in Delhi,and finishing high school from Springdales School (Pusa Road),New Delhi, [11] Atishi graduated in history from St. Stephen's College,Delhi in 2001. Soon after,she went to the Oxford University and in 2003 she completed her master's degree in History on a Chevening scholarship. [12] In 2005 she went to Magdalen College,Oxford as a Rhodes scholar. In January 2013,she became involved in policy formulation for the AAP,which has its roots in that movement. [6]
She was closely involved with the Jal Satyagraha in Khandwa district of Madhya Pradesh 2015 and provided support to the AAP leader and activist spearheading the campaign Alok Agarwal during the historic protests,as well as during the legal battle that ensued. [14] After the 2020 elections,she was made the AAP's in-charge for its Goa unit. [15]
Atishi was appointed the Lok Sabha in-charge for East Delhi for the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. [16] She contested from the East Delhi Lok Sabha constituency as an AAP party candidate for the 2019 Lok Sabha Elections. She lost to BJP's candidate Gautam Gambhir by a margin of 4.77 lakh votes,coming in third.
She contested in the 2020 Delhi Legislative Assembly election from Kalkaji constituency of South Delhi. She defeated Dharambir Singh,a Bharatiya Janata Party candidate,by 11,422 votes. [17]
As a Cabinet Minister
She was inducted into the Delhi Government as a Cabinet Minister,along with Saurabh Bharadwaj after the resignation of Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia and Health Minister Satyender Jain.
Since 2020,she is an elected member of the 7th Delhi Assembly representing Kalkaji Assembly constituency.
Atishi was also spearheading the flagship Mohalla Sabha Project for the Government of NCT of Delhi. The effort to decentralise governance to empower every citizen was a major promise of the AAP before coming to power. [21]

On March 15, 2019, Atishi Marlena and three other party leaders were summoned to court in response to a defamation case filed by the Delhi BJP's vice-president, Rajeev Babbar. The case stemmed from their claim that the BJP had removed 30 lakh names from Delhi's voter list. [22] The court found the allegation prima facie defamatory and invoked Section 500 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for defamation. The case revolved around allegations of voter list manipulation and its impact on the BJP's reputation. [23]
BJP leader Praveen Shankar Kapoor filed a defamation suite in 2024 against Marlena and Kejriwal over the allegations of poaching. [24]
The Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) is the youth wing of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), one of the two major political parties in India, and formerly the youth wing of the dissolved Janata Party (1978-1980). He represents the Patparganj constituency in Delhi Legislative Assembly since 2015 and had also represented the constituency from 2013 to 2014. He has been in custody since February 2023 on corruption charges in a major Delhi liquor scam. He is one of the founding members of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and a member of its National Executive Committee.
Sanjay Singh is an Indian activist, national spokesman for Aam Aadmi Party, and a member of the Rajya Sabha from Delhi. In October 2023, he was arrested by Enforcement Directorate for his alleged role in the Delhi Liquor Scam. After 6 months of custody, ED did not oppose the grant of bail to him and he was released on bail by Supreme Court.

Legislative Assembly elections were held in Delhi on 8 February 2020 to elect 70 members of the Delhi Legislative Assembly. Voters turnout was recorded at 62.82%, a decline of 4.65% from the previous assembly election in Delhi but 2.2% more than the 2019 Indian general election in Delhi. The term of the assembly elected in 2015 expired on 22 February 2020. The Aam Aadmi Party, led by Arvind Kejriwal won 62 seats to claim an absolute majority in the elections.

Aam Aadmi Party Delhi or AAP Delhi is a state wing of Aam Aadmi Party. AAP became a state party in Delhi in 2013. The party contested its first election in Delhi in 2013 and was successful in winning 28 seats in a hung assembly. It got outside support from Indian National Congress and Arvind Kejriwal became the Chief Minister of Delhi but he resigned after 49 days due to differences with INC. In the following 2015 elections, AAP won 67 of the 70 seats in the assembly, limiting BJP at just 3 seats and INC with none and Kejriwal was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Delhi. AAP formed the government again in the subsequent 2020 Delhi Legislative Assembly election, winning 62 seats.
On 30 March 2022, the official residence of Arvind Kejriwal, Chief Minister of Delhi, was attacked by members of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia called the incident a conspiracy to murder Kejriwal. Tejasvi Surya, the national president of Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha and a member of the Lok Sabha, had led a protest against Arvind Kejriwal with around 200 BJYM members. Several protesters were seen in CCTV footage breaking barriers in front of Kejriwal's residence and daubing red paint on the main gate. According to Delhi Police officials, the attackers also damaged a CCTV camera. Kejriwal's party, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), stated that he was not in the house at the time of the attack, but members of his family were present.
The Delhi Liquor Scam is a political scandal concerning the Delhi Government, which paved its way through the introduction of Delhi's Excise Policy from 2021 to 2022. This policy brought in private firms and enterprise companies into the retail liquor sectors. The allegations involve favouring the owners and shareholders of private sectors, waivers and reduction of license fee and creation of numerous licenses to all the new incoming enterprises, and bribery. The Excise policy 2021–22 created by the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), projected it as a reform in the excise and retail liquor sector, thereby boosting the revenue by Rs 9,500 crores. This policy mainly focused on moving out the retail sector, and making way to large private sectors and firms. The policy was structured by a group of ministers from the cabinet, and the draft was approved and accepted by the government in March 2021.
