August Rei VR III/1 (22 March [ O.S. 10 March] 1886 [1] –29 March 1963) was an Estonian politician,the Head of State (Riigivanem) of Estonia in 1928–1929,and the Prime Minister in duties of the President of Estonia in the government in exile in 1945–1963.
August Rei was born in Kurla,Pilistvere parish,Kreis Fellin,Governorate of Livonia,Russian Empire (now Türi Parish,Järva County). Rei studied in the Tartu Emperor Alexander High School (the former State High School of the Livonian Governorate),but graduated from the Novgorod State High School. In 1904–1905 and 1907–1911,studied law in the St. Petersburg University.
In 1905–1907,Rei participated in the Russian Revolution of 1905. In 1906,he edited the underground paper Sotsiaaldemokraat ( Social Democrat ) in Tallinn. Between 1912 and 1913,he was in compulsory army service. In 1913–1914 he worked as a lawyer in Viljandi. In 1914–1917 Rei was an artillery officer in World War I at the Fort of St. Petersburg. In 1917 and 1918 he was in the Estonian army units (formed after the Second Russian Revolution in March 1917 by the initiative of Estonian politicians,who achieved the permission to concentrate the Estonian soldiers). He was the Assistant Chairman of the Supreme Committee of the Estonian military. In 1917 and 1919,he was the Editor-in-Chief of the paper Sotsiaaldemokraat. Between 1927 and 1928 he was the editor of Rahva Sõna (Word of the People). Rei was one of the leaders of the moderate faction of Estonia's social democratic movement. Up to 1936 he also worked as a lawyer and defended Ado Birk in 1927. He received an Honorary Doctorate in Law from Tartu University.
Rei wrote and translated socialist works and published memoirs.
Siim Kallas is a Soviet and Estonian politician,former Prime Minister of Estonia,and former European Commissioner,as well as a former member of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. He served as the European Commissioner for Transport between 2010 and 2014. Before that he was the European Commissioner for Administrative Affairs,Audit and Anti-Fraud between 2004 and 2009. In both Barroso Commissions he was also a Vice-President. He was twice appointed the Acting Commissioner for Economic and Monetary Affairs and the Euro in Olli Rehn's stead,from 19 April 2014 to 25 May 2014 while he was on electoral campaign leave for the 2014 elections to the European Parliament and from 1 July 2014 to 16 July 2014 after he took up his seat.
Otto August Strandman was an Estonian politician,who served as prime minister (1919) and State Elder of Estonia (1929–1931). He was one of the leaders of the centre-left Estonian Labour Party,that saw its biggest support after the 1919 and 1920 elections. Strandman was a key figure in composing the radical land reform law and the 1920 Constitution. He also served as Minister of Agriculture (1918–1919),Minister of Justice,Minister of Finance (1924),Minister of Foreign Affairs and Minister of War (1919). While he was holding the office of the Minister of Finance,he stabilized the economy and managed to avoid hyperinflation. Strandman served as the speaker of the Estonian Provincial Assembly in 1917–1918,and as speaker of the newly independent country's parliament (Riigikogu) in 1921. He was also a diplomat,serving as the Estonian envoy in Warsaw,Poland (1927–1929),and in Paris,France (1933–1939).
Korporatsioon Vironia is an Estonian fraternal student society and the oldest student corps in Estonia. The organization is named after the Latin name for the ancient Estonian county of Virumaa. A full member of the organization is called a "vironus",while every member can also be called a "Vironian" (viroonlane).
Konstantin Päts was an Estonian statesman and the country's president in 1938–1940. Päts was one of the most influential politicians of the independent democratic Republic of Estonia,and during the two decades prior to World War II he also served five times as the country's prime minister. After the 16–17 June 1940 Soviet invasion and occupation of Estonia,President Päts remained formally in office for over a month,until he was forced to resign,imprisoned by the new Stalinist regime,and deported to the USSR,where he died in 1956.
