Avilla, Missouri Village in Missouri, United States

Avilla is a rural village in Jasper County, Missouri, United States. The population was 125 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Joplin, Missouri Metropolitan Statistical Area. Avilla is the fourth-oldest settlement in Jasper County today, founded in 1856. It was platted and laid out for public use July 23, 1858 by Andrew L. Love and David S. Holman. Avilla also has a fire and rescue station in the town but law enforcement is provided by the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the Carthage Police Department, or the Jasper County Sheriffs Office.

Programs include basketball and agriculture, and the school boasts a low student to teacher ratio. Avilla is located at 37°11′38″N 94°07′44″W, in Jasper County ten miles east of Carthage, Missouri on MO Route 96 and four miles west of the Lawrence County line.

<i>Sinomammut</i> genus of mammals

Sinomammut is a proboscidean found in the Miocene of China. It was known from a single, fragmentary, mandible found in the 1990s. However, most of the specimen has been lost, leaving only the right ramus and an in-situ photograph of the mandible. The mandible was originally thought a gompothere closely related to Sinomastodon, but an analysis revealed it to actually be a mammutid that was a sister group to the well-known Mastodon. It can be distinguished from the mastodon by its lack of lower tusks.

Anancidae is an extinct family of large herbivorous mammals that were closely related to elephants. They were assigned to Gomphotheriidae in the past, but recent authors consider them a distinct family. Under the Gomphotheriidae sensu lato they were known as the tetralophodont gompotheres based on their molar morphology.
