Dharun Ayyasamy (born 31 December 1996) is an Indian track athlete. He specialises in the 400 metres and the 400 metres hurdles events. He participated in the 4 × 400 metres relay event at the 2016 Summer Olympics.

400 metres sprint running event

The 400 metres, or 400 metre dash, is a sprinting event in track and field competitions. It has been featured in the athletics programme at the Summer Olympics since 1896 for men and since 1964 for women. On a standard outdoor running track, it is one lap around the track. Runners start in staggered positions and race in separate lanes for the entire course. In many countries, athletes previously competed in the 440 yard dash (402.336 m)—which is a quarter of a mile and was referred to as the 'quarter-mile'—instead of the 400 m (437.445 yards), though this distance is now obsolete.

Early life

Dharun was born on 31 December 1996 in a village called Ravuthampalayam [2] near Avinashi in Tiruppur district. When he was in fourth grade, his father died of tuberculosis. Dharun's mother is a school teacher while his sister Sathya plays volleyball for Tamil Nadu. [3] [4]

Tuberculosis (TB) is an infectious disease usually caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) bacteria. Tuberculosis generally affects the lungs, but can also affect other parts of the body. Most infections do not have symptoms, in which case it is known as latent tuberculosis. About 10% of latent infections progress to active disease which, if left untreated, kills about half of those affected. The classic symptoms of active TB are a chronic cough with blood-containing sputum, fever, night sweats, and weight loss. It was historically called "consumption" due to the weight loss. Infection of other organs can cause a wide range of symptoms.

Dharun completed his schooling at The Century Foundation School in Tirupur where he was coached by Mr. Alagesan and he never looked back since then. He later studied B. A. at the Alva's College of Arts in Moodabidri, Karnataka. [5] He represented Tamil Nadu at kho kho before switching to athletics in tenth grade. [3] [6]

Kho kho tag sport played by teams

Kho kho is a popular tag and ancient sport from India. It is played by teams of 12 nominated players out of fifteen, of which nine enter the field who sit on their knees, and 3 extra who try to avoid being touched by members of the opposing team. It is one of the two most popular traditional tag games in the Indian subcontinent, the other being Kabaddi. Apart from the Indian subcontinent, it is also played by the Indian community in South Africa. Kho-kho, traditional Indian sport, a form of tag, that is one of the oldest forms of outdoor sport, dating back to prehistoric India.

Dharun won the 400 metres hurdles gold medal at the 2016 South Asian Games in Guwahati with a time of 50.54 seconds, finishing 0.03 seconds ahead of fellow Indian Jithin Paul whom he overtook at the last hurdle. [7]

2016 South Asian Games

The 2016 South Asian Games, officially the XII South Asian Games, is a major multi-sport event which took place from 5 February to 16 February 2016 in Guwahati and Shillong, India. A total of 2,672 athletes competed in 226 events over 22 sports. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 2016 South Asian Games in Guwahati on 5 February 2016. The sporting giant of the region, India continued its dominance in the game's medal tally with a staggering 308 medals including 188 gold medals.

In July 2016, Dharun was part of the relay team that broke the national 4 × 400 metres relay record at Bangalore and qualified for the Olympics. The quartet of Dharun, Mohammad Anas, Kunhu Muhammed and Arokia Rajiv clocked 3:00:91, rewriting the national record of 3:02.17 set by themselves four weeks earlier in Turkey. The performance helped the relay team jump to 13th place in the world rankings. [8] It was the third time a men's relay team from India qualified for the Olympics, after 1964 and 2000.

Mohammad Anas Yahiya is an Indian sprinter who specialises in the 400 metres distance. He competed at the 2016 Summer Olympics in the 400 metres and the 4 × 400 m relay, and holds the national record (45.31) in the 400 meters, which he set at the 2018 Czech Athletics Championships.

Kunhu Muhammed Indian sprinter

Kunhu Muhammed Puthanpurakkal is an Indian sprinter who specialises in the 400 metres event. He participated in the 4 × 400 metres relay event at the 2016 Summer Olympics.

In August 2018, Dharun won the 400 meter hurdles silver medal at the Asian Games in Jakarta with a timing of 48.96 seconds setting a new national record. [9] [10]

The 2018 Asian Games, officially known as the 18th Asian Games and also known as Jakarta–Palembang 2018, was a pan-Asian multi-sport event held from 18 August to 2 September 2018 in the Indonesian cities of Jakarta and Palembang. The Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) originally awarded the games to Hanoi, Vietnam in November 2012, but the hosting rights were given up seventeen months later. Indonesia, which originally finished second in the bid, was considered as the strongest replacement candidate and eventually awarded the rights amid the 2014 games. Surabaya, the city put forward during the bid, was replaced by Jakarta and Palembang, having hosted the 2011 Southeast Asian Games together.

At 2014 Commonwealth Games Vikas Gowda won the Men's Discus Throw gold medal.
