History

The bank can trace its origins to the former Bangladesh Commerce and Investment Limited, set up on 27 January 1986. [2] It was a non-bank financial institution. In April 1992 its activities were suspended by Bangladesh Bank due to a liquidity crises. [2] To protect the banking sector, the employees, and customers of the firm, it was changed into a bank by Bangladesh Bank. [2] Bangladesh Commerce Bank Limited was incorporated on 1 June 1998. [2] S Alam Group is an investor in the bank. [3]

In August 2004, Bangladesh Bank placed in a watchlist of "problem banks". [4] The bank donated to Prime Minister Khaleda Zia's relief fund. [5] Md Enayet Ullah was appointed managing director of the bank. [6]

A branch of the bank in Ashulia, Bangladesh was robbed on 21 April 2015. Nine people including the bank manager were killed. [7] One of the robber was killed and 2 were captured out of an estimated 8-9 robbers. [8] The attack was blamed on Islamic militants. 6 members Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) and Ansarullah Bangla Team were sentenced to death in the case and others were imprisoned. [7] [9] [10]

In 2018, Bangladesh Commerce Bank Limited had 31.6 per cent bad loans. [11]

In 2021, Bangladesh Commerce Bank Limited had found it difficult to recover 5.02 billion taka it had deposited with six non bank financial institutions. [12] The institutions were Bangladesh Industrial Finance Company Limited, FAS Finance and Investment Limited, First Finance Limited, International Leasing and Financial Services Limited, Peoples Leasing and Financial Services Limited, and Premier Leasing and Finance Limited. [12] Some of the institutions funds were embezzled by Prashanta Kumar Halder. [12]

On 28 June 2022, Bangladesh Bank allowed Bangladesh Commerce Bank Limited to reschedule a 1.99 billion taka defaulted loan to SB Exim, which is owned by Shahjahan Bablu who faces allegations of money laundering through fake invoicing exports from the Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit. [13] The bank overspent corporate social responsibility fund on disaster management. [14] [15] In July the bank launched sharia based banking services. [16] Bangladesh Commerce Bank Limited filed a check dishonour case against Marrin Vegetable Oils Limited, a subsidiary of Nurjahan Group. [17] The chairman of the group, Tipu Sultan and managing director, Jahir Ahmed, were sentenced to one year in jail in the case. [17] Rashid Ahmed Chowdhury was re-elected chairman of the board in October 2022. [18]

The group has been claimed by police to be linked to Islami Chhatra Shibir, the student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami party in Bangladesh.

Jubilee Banks is one of the oldest commercial banks in Bangladesh. It is a non-scheduled bank, one of five in Bangladesh. The others are Ansar-VDP Unnayan Bank, Grameen Bank, Karmasangsthan Bank, and Palli Sanchay Bank. It is scheduled for liquidation in 2022.

Ashulia bank robbery was a robbery of the Ashulia branch of Bangladesh Commerce Bank Limited by members of Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh and Ansarullah Bangla Team, both of which are Jihadist terror organizations, to raise funds for terror attacks in 2015. The terrorists killed 7 civilians in the bank during the robbery and one terrorist was killed while fleeing the scene. In 2016, six of the robbers were sentenced to death for their part in the robbery.

Proshanta Kumar Halder, a banker and known as "Sultan of swindle", had according to media reports embezzled 30 billion taka from the institute and according to Bangladesh Bank 15.69 billion taka. The fraud was aided Amitav Adhikary, a cousin of Proshanta Kumar Halder and senior management at International Leasing and Financial Services Limited.

People's Leasing and Financial Services Limited is a major non-bank financial institution in Bangladesh. Hasan Shaheed Ferdous is the Chairman of the People's Leasing and Financial Services Limited. Proshanta Kumar Halder, known as the Sultan of Swindle, was scammed 35 billion taka from People's Leasing and Financial Services Limited.

FAS Finance and Investment Limited is a major non-bank financial institution in Bangladesh. Mohammed Nurul Amin is the chairman and A. F. Shabbir Ahmad is the Managing Director of FAS Finance and Investment Limited. It was one of the financial institutions targeted by Prashanta Kumar Halder, nicknamed the Sultan of Swindle by The Daily Star, who had stolen 102 billion taka from FAS Finance and Investment Limited, People's Leasing and Financial Services Limited, International Leasing and Financial Services Limited, Reliance Finance Limited, and NRB Global Bank Limited. It is listed on the Dhaka Stock Exchange.

Aviva Finance Limited is a sharia complaint major non-bank financial institution in Bangladesh. It was formerly called Reliance Finance Limited. Mohammed Saiful Alam is the chairman of Aviva Finance Limited and also S. Alam Group. The former managing director of Reliance Finance Limited, Proshanta Kumar Halder, embezzled from Reliance and other financial institutions in Bangladesh through fraudulent loans. According to the Anti-Corruption Commission Proshanta Kumar Halder had stolen 102 billion taka. The Daily Star gave Proshanta Kumar Halder the name sultan of swindle.

Bangladesh Industrial Finance Company Limited is a major non-bank financial institution in Bangladesh. Moyeenul Islam Chowdhury is the chairman of the Bangladesh Industrial Finance Company Limited. The company was in financial troubles due to embezzlement by former chairman Abdul Mannan. The company has given large loans that are none performing to Sunman Group subsidiaries, owned by Abdul Mannan. It is listed on the Dhaka Stock Exchange. Bangladesh Industrial Finance Company Limited was one of four financial institutions targeted by Proshanta Kumar Halder; the others were People's Leasing and Financial Service Limited, FAS Finance and Investment Limited, and Reliance Finance Limited.

MIDAS Financing Limited is a major non-bank financial institution in Bangladesh. Md. Ashraful Moqbul is the chairman of the board of directors of Fareast Finance and Investment Limited. It is listed on the Dhaka Stock Exchange.

Premier Leasing and Finance Limited, also known as PLFL, is a major non-bank financial institution in Bangladesh. Abu Sadek Md. Sohel is the chairman and Md. Fazlur Rahman is the managing director of Premier Leasing and Finance Limited.
