Barrie John Meyer (21 August 1932 –13 September 2015) was an English footballer and cricketer,and later a cricket umpire. [1]
Meyer played football for Bristol Rovers in 139 league matches,scoring 60 goals. He also played for Plymouth Argyle,Newport County,Bristol City and Hereford United. In the summer,he worked as a member of the groundstaff at Gloucestershire County Cricket Club. A good wicket-keeper,he played for Gloucestershire County Cricket Club in 406 first-class cricket matches from 1957 to 1971. He took 707 catches and 119 stumpings,but was a relatively poor batsman - his career first-class batting average is only 14.19,with a highest score of 63.
Meyer was born in Bournemouth. When he retired,he became a cricket umpire. He umpired 26 Tests in England from 1978 to 1993,including the 1981 Ashes Test at Headingley. He also umpired 23 One Day Internationals from 1977 to 1993,including the Cricket World Cup finals at Lord's in 1979 and 1983. [2]
Meyer officiated along with David Evans during the 1984 Lord's test between England and the West Indies cricket team where the then record of lbw dismissals was equalled,although this record has now been exceeded on numerous occasions. [3] In the West Indies first innings Meyer gave West Indies batsman Viv Richards out lbw. According to 'Wisden':"Umpire Meyer later stated that he may have made a mistake,and that he had considered recalling Richards". [4] However the West Indies won the match easily in any case.
Meyer holds the accolade of being the only footballer in history to score a goal against Manchester United in the FA Cup and go on to become a Test match umpire. He scored in Bristol Rovers' 4–0 win over Manchester United in the third round of the cup at Eastville on 7 January 1956,which was United's 9th biggest defeat in FA Cup history.
In 2006,he published an autobiography,Getting It Right,co-authored with Andrew Hignell.
Meyer's son Adrian was also a footballer,making 144 appearances and scoring 12 goals,for Scarborough,many in the Football League,before injury curtailed his career.
He died at the age of 83 in 2015. [5]

He was denied the international stage by South Africa's banishment from world cricket in the 1970s and 1980s. He was a Wisden Cricketer of the Year in 1970 and South African cricketer of the year in 1967.
Sir Anderson Montgomery Everton Roberts,KCN is a former Antiguan first-class cricketer who is considered the father of modern West Indian fast bowling. Roberts played Test cricket for the West Indies,twice taking seven wickets in a Test innings,and was a member of the team that won both the 1975 Cricket World Cup and the 1979 Cricket World Cup respectively. Arriving in England in 1972,he played first-class cricket for Hampshire County Cricket Club and then later for Leicestershire County Cricket Club.
Hamish John Hamilton Marshall is a former New Zealand cricketer,who played all formats of the game for New Zealand. He is the identical twin brother of James Marshall. Hamish and James became the second pair of twins to play Test cricket,and are the first identical pair.

David Robert Shepherd was a first-class cricketer who played county cricket for Gloucestershire,and later became one of the cricket world's best-known umpires. He stood in 92 Test matches,the last of them in June 2005,the most for any English umpire. He also umpired 172 ODIs,including three consecutive World Cup finals in 1996,1999 and 2003.
Philip Verant Simmons is a Trinidadian cricket coach and former player. He played international cricket for the West Indies from 1987 to 1999 as an opening batsman and right-arm medium pace bowler. He excelled in the One Day International (ODI) format and represented the West Indies at three Cricket World Cups.
Peter Willey is a former English cricketer,who played as a right-handed batsman and right-arm offbreak bowler. In and out of the England team,he interrupted his international career for three years by taking part in the first of the England players' South African rebel tours in 1982. After his playing career ended,he became a Test umpire.
The Wisden Trophy was awarded to the winner of the Test cricket series played between England and the West Indies. It was first awarded in 1963 to commemorate the hundredth edition of Wisden Cricketers' Almanack. Series were played in accordance with the future tours programme,with varying lengths of time between tours. If a series was drawn then the country holding the Wisden Trophy retained it. In 2020,it was announced that the trophy would be replaced by the Richards–Botham Trophy named after Sir Vivian Richards and Sir Ian Botham.
Ian James Gould is an English former first-class cricketer and a former member of the ICC Elite Panel of cricket umpires. He previously also served as the chairman of English football club Burnham FC. In April 2019,Gould announced that he would retire as an umpire following the 2019 Cricket World Cup. On 6 July 2019,Gould retired from umpiring,after standing in the World Cup match between India and Sri Lanka. However,he has since umpired in matches in the 2020 Under-19 Cricket World Cup.
Deshabandu Handunnettige Deepthi Priyantha Kumar Dharmasena is a Sri Lankan cricket umpire and former international cricketer. He is a member of the ICC Elite Panel Umpires and the first and only person to represent an ICC Cricket World Cup final both as a player and an umpire,as he was a member of the Sri Lankan side that won the 1996 Cricket World Cup. He was a right-handed batsman and a right-arm off break bowler.
Hashim Mohammad Amla OIS is a South African former cricketer who played for South Africa in all three formats of the game. Amla holds the record for being the fastest ever to score 2000,3000,4000,5000,6000 and 7000 ODI runs. He also became the fastest cricketer to reach 10 ODI centuries. Amla is an occasional off break bowler,and was South Africa's Test captain from June 2014 to January 2016.

Millns was a fast bowler,and a lower order batsman who was part of two championship winning sides with Leicestershire,in 1996 and 1998.
Jason Omar Holder is a Barbadian cricketer and the former captain of the West Indies cricket team. He is a right arm medium-fast bowling all-rounder who features in all three cricketing formats. In January 2019,he was ranked as the number one all rounder in the world according to the official ICC Test rankings. In August 2019,Cricket West Indies named him as the Test Player of the Year and on 14 April 2021,Holder was named one of Wisden's Five Cricketers of the Year. Holder is the first West Indian male cricketer to take a hat-trick in a T20i,and the fifth,to achieve both 2000 runs and 100 wickets in one day internationals. He also the second west indian,after Garfield Sobers,to attain both 2500 runs and 150 wickets in test match cricket. Holder was a member of the West Indies team that won the 2016 T20 World Cup.
Shai Diego Hope is a West Indian cricketer,who plays as a wicketkeeper/batsman for the West Indies cricket team. He is also the current ODI captain of the Windies. In June 2018,he was named the Men's Cricketer of the Year,Test Cricketer of the Year and the ODI Cricketer of the Year at the annual Cricket West Indies' Awards. The following year,he was named the CWI ODI Player of the Year. He is generally regarded as one of the best ODI batsmen in the contemporary cricketing world. Hope has also twice been named,for both 2020 and 2022,in the ICC ODI Team of the Year.
James Robert Bracey is an English cricketer who plays for Gloucestershire County Cricket Club. He is a left-handed batsman,who also plays as a wicket-keeper. He made his first-class debut for Gloucestershire against Sussex in September 2016. He made his international debut for the England cricket team in June 2021. His brother,Sam,has also played first-class cricket.
