The York Lions is the official name for the athletic varsity teams that represent York University in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The university's varsity teams compete in the Ontario University Athletics conference of U Sports and, where applicable, in the east division. The Lion's logo features a red lion from the school's logo with the university's colours, red and white.

The 2013 Summer Universiade, officially known as the XXVII Summer Universiade, was held in the city of Kazan, Russia, the most northerly city ever to host a Summer Universiade. Over 10,400 university athletes from 162 countries participated in 13 mandatory and 14 optional sports, making the 2013 Universiade the biggest ever in the history of the event. For the first time in history a Cultural Universiade was also included, with many festivals and shows held simultaneously with the sporting events. The Universiade was organized by the International University Sports Federation (FISU) and by the authorities of the Republic of Tatarstan.
Volleyball tournaments have been staged at the Universiade since 1959. The men's tournament was introduced at the 1959 Summer Universiade, while the women's tournament was introduced at the 1961 Summer Universiade. After not being included in 1975 and 1989.
Beach volleyball will be contested at the 2011 Summer Universiade from August 13 to August 19 at the beach of Dameisha Park in Shenzhen, China. Thirty-two men's and women's teams will participate.
Nataliya Olegovna Goncharova, from 2012 to 2016 Obmochaeva, is a Russian female volleyball player. She played for the Ukraine women's national volleyball team until 2010 when she became part of the Russia women's national volleyball team.

The Philippines has participated at the Universiade debuting at the 1967 Summer Universiade. From 1967 until 2007, athletes representing the country were sent by the University Athletic Association of the Philippines with sanction from Philippine Olympic Committee. Since 2011 it is the Federation of School Sports Association of the Philippines (FESSAP), a member of the International University Sports Federation (FISU), that has been sending competitors representing the country at the Universiade.
Natalia Nicolaevna Malykh is a Russian volleyball player, who plays as an opposite. She is member of the Russia women's national volleyball team and plays for Dinamo Krasnodar. Malykh was part of the Russian team which won the European Championships of 2013 and 2015. In 2017, Malykh married Ruslan Bykanov, a beach volleyball player.
