Abu Belal Muhammad Shafiul Haq (born 1 December 1958) is a retired four star general of the Bangladesh Army. He was the chief of army staff of the Bangladesh Army from 25 June 2015 to 25 June 2018. [1] Before becoming the army head, he served as the principal staff officer of Prime Minister's Office of the Armed Forces Division. [2] He has also served as an aide-de-camp to the president of Bangladesh. [3] He was commissioned into the armoured corps of the Bangladesh Army from 6th SSC (Short Service Commission) in June 1978. [4]
Abu Belal Muhammad Shafiul Huq was born on 1 December 1958 in Noakhali, East Pakistan (now Bangladesh). [5] He passed Secondary School Certificate (SSC) from Dinajpur Zilla School in 1972. He obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree from Dhaka University, master's degree in defense studies from National University Bangladesh, and master's degree in philosophy from Bangladesh University of Professionals. His brother Annisul Huq was elected Mayor of Dhaka North City Corporation in April 2015. [6]
ABM Shafiul Huq received formal education from Dhaka University and afterward joined Bangladesh Military Academy on 22 July, 1977. After completion of training, he was commissioned in Bengal Lancers on 18 June 1978 in the 6th SSC (Short Service Commission) course. He was adjudged as the best all-round cadet of his batch and was awarded Sword of Honor (an award given to the best meritorious cadet in Bangladeshi military forces). In a distinguished career spanning 40 years, Shafiul Huq has held a variety of command, staff and instructional appointments. As a staff, he served as the aide-de-camp (ADC) to the president of Bangladesh, brigade major (BM) of an infantry brigade and colonel staff of an infantry division. He commanded two tank units, three brigades (one armored and two infantry) and two divisions (19th and 33rd). He also served as military secretary and adjutant general of the army. [7]
From 1988 to 1989, Shafiul Huq served as a military observer with the United Nations Iran-Iraq Military Observer Group (UNIIMOG). Shafiul Huq was appointed deputy force commander and chief military observer of UNMEE on 4 January 2007.
Shafiul Huq is married to Shoma Huq. They have a son named Marzuq, and a daughter. [8] Anisul Huq, the first mayor of Dhaka North City Corporation is his elder brother. [9] His father Shariful Huq was the former director of Bangladesh Ansar and took retirement in 1982.
He retired from the army with effect from 25 June 2018. [1]

Bangladesh has undergone several changes of government since the Proclamation of Independence in 1971. Between the first recorded uprising in August 1975 and the last known attempt in December 2011, Bangladesh has been through as many as 29 military coups.
Abu Saleh Mohammad NasimBir Bikrom is a former Chief of Army Staff of the Bangladesh Army. In 1996, he attempted a military coup of the caretaker government which was preparing for general elections. After failure of the coup in 1996, he was arrested, placed under house arrest, and subsequently dismissed from service. That year, the Awami League was elected to power in the government. It reverted Nasim's dismissal from the military and later provided him with an honorable discharge.
Muhammed Abul ManzurBU was a Bangladeshi military officer who commanded the Bangladesh Forces operations in Sector 8 during the Bangladesh Liberation War against Pakistan in 1971. He was allegedly involved in the assassination of the then-president of Bangladesh, Ziaur Rahman. The erstwhile chief of army staff and alleged mastermind of Rahman's assassination, Hussain Muhammad Ershad, had put a standing shoot-to-kill order on Manzur's life—he was killed shortly after being captured at the border. About a year later, Ershad initiated a bloodless coup d'état and took over the central government, holding power until 1990.
Lieutenant General Sagat Singh, PVSM was a General Officer in the Indian Army, notable for his participation in the liberation of Goa and later in Indo-Pakistani war of 1971. He held many commands and staff appointments throughout his career.
Mohammad Abdul Mubeen is a retired Bangladeshi army officer who served as the chief of army staff of the Bangladesh Army from 2009 to 2012. Prior to his appointment as chief of army staff, Abdul Mubeen served as principal staff officer of the Armed Forces Division. He served as general officer commanding of two divisions: the 24th Infantry Division and the 55th Infantry Division. He retired from the army in 2012 after serving as army chief.
Sina Ibn Jamali, awc, psc is a retired lieutenant general of the Bangladesh Army. During his tenures he held the appointments of Director Military Operations, Adjutant General, Bangladesh Army, General Officer Commanding of 24 Infantry Division, Chittagong and the Chief of General Staff in Army Headquarters. He also served as the president of Bangladesh Cricket Board from August 2007 to September 2009. Currently he is serving as Corporate Adviser at Radiant Pharmaceuticals Ltd, MD & CEO of Radiant Nutraceuticals Ltd, Radiant Distribution Ltd and Pharmacil Ltd.
Chowdhury Hasan Sarwardy, Bir Bikram, SBP, BSP, OSP, ndc, psc is a retired lieutenant general of Bangladesh Army and former commandant of National Defence College. He previously served as GOC of Army Training and Doctrine Command (ARTDOC).
Iqbal Karim Bhuiyan is a retired Bangladeshi army officer who served as the Chief of Army Staff of the Bangladesh Army from 2012 to 2015. He took office of army chief at 25 June 2012 and retired on 25 June 2015. He joined Bangladesh Military Academy on 19 March 1976 and was commissioned on 30 November 1976 in the Infantry Regiment. Iqbal had a diversified and fine mix of all three types of appointment available in army. During 39 years in Bangladesh Army, He commanded three infantry battalions, an infantry brigade and three divisions. He also served as chief of general staff, colonel staff of a division, and platoon commander of the Bangladesh Military Academy. He participated in Operation Desert Storm and received 'Liberation of Kuwait Medal'.
Annisul Huq was a Bangladeshi entrepreneur, television show host and the mayor of Dhaka North City Corporation.
Lieutenant General Mohammed Khaled Al-Khadher, الفريق ركن محمد خالد الخضر He is the former Chief of General Staff of Kuwait Armed forces. He is a commando officer in Kuwait Army who progressed in the chain of command since 1977, when he got commissioned from Kuwait military college, currently Ali Al-Sabah Military College, until reaching the highest post in the Army as a chief of general staff.
Tukur Yusuf Burataipsc(+) NAM GSS ndc (BD) is a retired Nigerian army lieutenant general, former Chief of Army Staff, and Nigeria's Ambassador to the Republic of Benin. He was commissioned into the Nigerian Army in 1983 and has had multiple command, administrative, and instructional appointments.

Sabbir Ahmed, SBP, OSP, SGP, ndc, psc, is a retired lieutenant general of the Bangladesh Army who served as Chief of General Staff in the Army Training and Doctrine Command (ARTDOC). He also served as General-Officer-Commanding (GOC). Before that he was GOC of the 24th Infantry Division in Chittagong. He also served as GOC of 66th Infantry Division, Director of Military Training (DMT) of Army Headquarters Military Training Directorate of Bangladesh Army.
The Principal Staff Officer, abbreviated as PSO, is the head of the Armed Forces Division, a ministry level joint forces headquarters under Prime Minister's Office. It acts as the high command of the national armed forces. It is currently held by a three-star rank lieutenant general.
