Belgian Athletics (formerly Royal Belgian Athletics Federation) is the governing body for the sport of athletics in Belgium.

Contents

It consists of the Flemish League of Athletics (Dutch: Vlaamse Atletiekliga) and the Francophone League of Athletics (French: Ligue Belge Francophone d'Atléthisme), cooperating for organising the national championships and for participation in international competitions.

Sport in Belgium plays a prominent role in the society. As of 2010, Belgium counted around 17,000 sport clubs with approximately 1.35 million members, or about 13% of the Belgian population. Popular sports in Belgium are, among others: football, cycling, tennis, table tennis, athletics, swimming, basketball, badminton, judo, hockey, rowing, motocross, auto racing, volleyball, and running. Belgium has organized the 1920 Olympic Games in Antwerp as well as the 1972 UEFA European Championship and the 2000 UEFA European Championship along with the Netherlands. The Belgium national football team's best result was a 3rd place at the 2018 FIFA World Cup and a second place of the 1980 UEFA European Championship. Belgian football clubs have won 3 times the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup and twice the UEFA Cup, plus 3 times the UEFA Supercup.

Rugby union in Belgium is a growing sport. The national governing body for rugby union in Belgium is the Belgian Rugby Federation. The national team plays in the European Nations Cup, and as of October 2014, they were ranked thirtieth in the World Rugby Rankings.

The Royal Belgian Badminton Federation (RBBF) is the governing body for Badminton in Belgium. The administrative seat is located in Braine-l'Alleud. The federation was one of the eleven founding members of Badminton Europe in 1967. It oversees both regional organizations in the country: Badminton Vlaanderen and Ligue Francophone Belge de Badminton.

The Belgian National Badminton League, also known as Victor League, is the top interclub competition in Belgian badminton. There are 2 national divisions organized by the Belgian Badminton Federation. All other divisions are organized per region. The competition format was restyled during the season 2007–2008.

The Lotto Volley League is the top flight in men's volleyball in Belgium. The league is organized by the Royal Belgian Volleyball Federation. VC Greenyard Maaseik is the most successful club of the Volleyliga with 15 national titles since 1991. The first Volleyliga was played in 1944–45 and won by Léopold Club.

The Ligue Francophone de Football Americain de Belgique (LFFAB) is one of the two conferences of the Belgian Football League (BFL). It consists of teams from the French Community, whereas the Flemish American Football League (FFL) consists of teams from the Flemish Community. The top three teams from the Francophone League qualify for the BFL playoffs at the conclusion of the regular season. The playoffs determine which teams play in the Belgian Bowl.

The Belgium Roller Hockey League was the biggest Roller Hockey Championship in Belgium. The last edition took place in 1999. The Belgium clubs have taking part in the Dutch NRBB.

The Belgian Scrabble Federation (BSF) is an association for Belgian Scrabble players. The federation has approximately 1,000 members in 60 clubs, and was the first federation for Francophone Scrabble players, founded in 1972, before the unified French Scrabble Federation and the International Francophone Scrabble Federation. As of 2012, the president is Éric Leurquin.

Nafissatou "Nafi" Thiam is a Belgian athlete specialising in multi-event competition. She is a two-time Olympic gold medalist, winning the heptathlon event at the 2016 Rio and 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Thiam is the only Belgian athlete, male or female, to successfully defend an Olympic title and only the second woman after Jackie Joyner-Kersee to win back-to-back Olympic titles in the event.

The Royal Belgian Tennis Federation is an organisation set up in 1902 that formally takes charge of tennis in Belgium. The Royal Belgian Swimming Federation is the umbrella swimming association in Belgium and is responsible for all types of swimming: swimming in lanes, water polo, synchronised swimming, diving and open water swimming. The federation has its registered office in Brussels. Michel Louwagie is the current president since 1998. The RBSF is affiliated with the Belgian Olympic Committee, the Ligue Européenne de Natation and the Federation Internationale de Natation. The Board of Directors and the General Assembly of the RBSF consist of representatives of the Flemish and Francophone swimming federations. The Belgian Swimming Federation is formally authorized to represent the Belgian swimming world and to deliver athletes and teams to international tournaments. The informal power and sport policy lie in fact with the regional swimming federations, which have the financial resources.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Belgian Indoor Athletics Championships</span>

The Belgian Indoor Athletics Championships is an annual indoor track and field competition organised by the Royal Belgian Athletics League, which serves as the Belgian national championship for the sport. Typically held over two to three days in February during the Belgian winter, it was first added to the national calendar in 1989, supplementing the main outdoor Belgian Athletics Championships held in the summer since 1889. National championships in relay and combined track and field events are contested separately.
