Berhanu Kebede (born 11 April 1956) is an Ethiopian diplomat who is the current Chief of Staff at RJMEC – Reconstituted Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission for the Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in the Republic of South Sudan. [1] [2] [3]
Berhanu Kebede was born in Addis Ababa. He graduated in 1978 with a degree in economics from Addis Ababa University and continued his studies at the Free University of Brussels, earning M.A. degrees in Development Economics (1986) and in Management and Finance (1988). [3]
He joined the Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1978, serving as Ethiopia/EEC Relations Desk Officer. In 1983 he was mandated to the Diplomatic Mission in Brussels, with the title of economist. Berhanu participated in negotiations leading to the 1981 and 1985 extensions of the Lomé Convention – an agreement concerning international aid and trade between the African, Caribbean and Pacific countries and the European Union – as well as participating in the committees that managed this convention. In 1992 Berhanu returned to Addis Ababa to lead the Western European Division at the Ministry at the rank of Counselor, before taking on the role of Acting Director General for International Organisation and Economic Cooperation in 1993. Later that year he was promoted to Director General, and it was in this role that he represented Ethiopia at all of the Organisation of African Unity Council and Summit conferences held between 1992 and 2000, as well as the Economic Commission for Africa Ministerial Conferences held in this period, chaired the Economic and Social Council meeting of the African Economic Community in June 1998, and served as deputy leader of the Ethiopian delegation to the United Nations from 1993 to 2000. On 7 December 2000, he was appointed the Ethiopian ambassador to Russia. In February 2002, he was appointed Ambassador of Ethiopia to Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland and Iceland. In March 2006 he was appointed as Ambassador of Ethiopia to the United Kingdom, a position he held during 10 years.
In 2016, H.E. Berhanu Kebede has been appointed Chief of Staff at JMEC – Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission for the Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in the Republic of South Sudan. [3]
Berhanu speaks Amharic, English and French. He is married with three children. [3]

Fisseha Adugna is an Ethiopian diplomat who was the Ethiopian ambassador to the United Kingdom. He served in this post from 8 March 2002 until March 2006. He was succeeded by Berhanu Kebede.

The African Union (AU) is a continental union consisting of 55 member states located on the continent of Africa. The AU was announced in the Sirte Declaration in Sirte, Libya, on 9 September, 1999, calling for the establishment of the African Union. The bloc was founded on 26 May 2001 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and launched on 9 July 2002 in Durban, South Africa. The intention of the AU was to replace the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), established on 25 May 1963 in Addis Ababa by 32 signatory governments; the OAU was disbanded on 9 July 2002. The most important decisions of the AU are made by the Assembly of the African Union, a semi-annual meeting of the heads of state and government of its member states.
The Abyei Area is an area of 10,546 km2 or 4,072 sq mi on the border between South Sudan and the Sudan that has been accorded "special administrative status" by the 2004 Protocol on the Resolution of the Abyei Conflict in the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) that ended the Second Sudanese Civil War. The capital of the Abyei Area is Abyei Town. Under the terms of the Abyei Protocol, the Abyei Area was considered, on an interim basis, to be simultaneously part of both the Republic of South Sudan and the Republic of the Sudan, effectively a condominium.
The United Democratic Front is a political party in South Sudan. It is led by Peter Abdurahman Sule. The party is represented in the Interim National Assembly of Sudan and the South Sudan Legislative Assembly, where it holds four seats.
United Nations Security Council resolution 1312, adopted unanimously on 31 July 2000, after reaffirming resolutions 1298 (1999) on the situation between Eritrea and Ethiopia, and 1308 (2000), the council established the United Nations Mission in Ethiopia and Eritrea (UNMEE) in anticipation of a peacekeeping operation subject to future authorisation.
Berhanu Dinka was an Ethiopian diplomat and economist. He was the ambassador to Djibouti, Canada, the United States, and the permanent representatives to the United Nations. Dinka served as Ethiopia's first ambassador to Djibouti from 1980 to 1984.
Gordon Muortat Mayen Maborjok (1922–2008) was a South Sudanese veteran politician and an advocate for the rights and freedom of the South Sudanese people. He was the President of the Nile Provisional Government (NPG) which led Anyanya I; Southern Sudan's first armed resistance to Khartoum which started in 1955. Muortat also served as Vice-President of the Southern Front (SF) and Foreign Minister in the Southern Sudan Provisional Government (SSPG).
Hizkias Assefa (1948) is a conflict mediator known widely in Africa for his non-aligned work as a consultant who has mediated in most major conflict situations in sub-Saharan Africa in the past 20 years, as well as in a dozen countries elsewhere. He is also a professor of conflict studies. Of Ethiopian origin, he is based in Nairobi, Kenya. He was one of the founding faculty members in 1994 of the Conflict Transformation Program at Eastern Mennonite University.
Mahboub Maalim is a Kenyan diplomat. He was the executive secretary of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (2008-2019). He was appointed by the 12th Summit of IGAD Heads of State and Government that was held on 14 June 2008 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. He was reappointed for a second term on 11 July 2012.
The Southern Sudan Association (SSA) was a London-based organization of southern Sudanese exiles and refugees. The SSA was founded in 1970 to build support in Europe for humanitarian assistance to southern Sudanese by publicizing the Sudan Government's attacks on its citizens, suffering in southern Sudan, and the epidemics that were rife there. Brian MacDermot served as the chairman of the SSA. The Director of the Southern Sudan Association was Enoch Mading de Garang.

Mull Sebujja Katende is a Ugandan diplomat, who serves as Uganda's Ambassador to the United States of America, based in Washington, DC. He was appointed to that position on 27 January 2017, and he took up the position in September 2017.
The Tigrayan peace process is a series of proposals, meetings, agreements and actions that aim to resolve the Tigray War. Around 9 November 2020, Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) and Tigray Region leader Debretsion Gebremichael asked the African Union to stop the war and requested peace negotiations; Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed refused to negotiate. On 25–27 November, a trio of former African presidents appointed by African Union chair Cyril Ramaphosa visited Ethiopia with the aim of mediating; they met Abiy and representatives of the Transitional Government of Tigray that officially replaced the elected TPLF Tigrayan government. An emergency Intergovernmental Authority on Development summit of East African heads of government and state met on 20 December 2020 in Djibouti, resulting in a statement of support for the Ethiopian constitutional order and humanitarian access to Tigray Region.
Ethiopia–Norway relations refers to foreign relations between the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia and the Kingdom of Norway. Norway has an embassy in Addis Abeba since 1991, whereas Ethiopia has an embassy in Norway's neighbouring country Sweden.
