Boomerang is a television channel broadcast in the United Kingdom and in the Republic of Ireland launched on 27 May 2000. It is broadcast 24 hours on the Sky, Virgin Media, BT TV, TalkTalk Plus TV, Virgin Media Ireland and TVPlayer (When subscribed to TVPlayer Plus). It mostly features classic cartoons such as Tom and Jerry and Scooby-Doo .

Warner Bros. Animation animation division of Warner Bros. Television Group

Warner Bros. Animation is the animation division of Warner Bros. The studio is closely associated with the Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies characters, among others. The studio is the successor to Warner Bros. Cartoons, the studio which produced Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies cartoon shorts from 1933 to 1963, and from 1967 to 1969. Warner reestablished its animation division in 1980 to produce Looney Tunes–related works.

History

Origins

Boomerang UK began as a block in 1993.

UK launch

Boomerang launched on 27 May 2000, [1] airing between 06:00-00:00, on Sky Digital and certain cable systems. Cartoon Network at the time had a tight schedule and so the channel was created by Turner Broadcasting to broadcast classic cartoons from the Hanna-Barbera, MGM and Warner Bros archive programme library, as well as freeing its sister network of many classics in the schedule. [2] In May 2001 the channel became the second highest rated kids' channel (amongst 4-9 year olds), with over 1.3m kids tuning in. It was beaten only by sister channel Cartoon Network. In July that year the channel was launched on UK cable operator Telewest network, thus increasing viewers. James Greville, head of Cartoon Network UK at the time, said, "The channel launched barely a year ago and yet it's already beaten established kids' channels in terms of ratings and share". [3] By November the channel was launched on NTL platform. [4] Boomerang increased its library of old cartoons by acquiring rights to other animated shows such as Danger Mouse, Snoopy, The Pink Panther and Garfield. [5] By the end of 2003 the channel started to move away from its original purpose, and moved to broadcast more recent programming.[ specify ]

A one-hour timeshift channel known as Boomerang +1 was launched on 6 March 2006.[ citation needed ]

Boomerang rebranded with the new international graphics package developed by UK based graphic design agency Art&Graft on 16 February 2015. [6] [7] The channel switched to 16:9 Widescreen on 1 June 2015. A HD feed known as Boomerang HD was launched on 24 June 2015. [8]

On 3 September 2018, the channel was rebranded and gained a new look. [9]

Live action programming

Between 23 July 2007 to 1 August 2009, the channel started airing live action programming, starting with Fraggle Rock (also on Cartoonito on the same day). [10] The series was a co-production between Jim Henson Television And HiT Entertainment (Jim Henson Television's International distributing arm). The show marks a major investment for Turner in live action at a time when many broadcasters are reviewing their commitment to children's programming (with Pupeeters From America).

Wheelie and the Chopper Bunch is an American animated television series, produced by Hanna-Barbera, which originally aired for one season on NBC from September 7, 1974 to November 30, 1974. With an ensemble voice cast consisting of Frank Welker, Judy Strangis, Paul Winchell and Lennie Weinrib, the show follows a humanlike Volkswagen Beetle named Wheelie and an evil motorcycle gang known as the "Chopper Bunch". In the show, the Scooby-Doo gang decide to travel during their last summer break together, encountering havoc-wreaking monsters along the way. Described as having a more comedic tone than its previous incarnation, Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated, the show employs character traits from the original 1969 series on top of redesigned character models.

Turner Network Television (TNT) is a digital television channel featuring blockbuster movies with a mix of TNT in its line-up for modern viewers, mostly from the Turner Entertainment and Warner Bros. film libraries, which include many MGM, United Artists, RKO and Warner Bros. titles. This version of the channel is available in Africa and the Arab world. In the Arab world, TNT has a unique schedule, it broadcasts in 4:3, and Arabic subtitles are optional.
