Brian O'Shea (born in Chicago, Illinois) is an American former boxer, referee, and judge.

Chicago, officially the City of Chicago, is the most populous city in Illinois, as well as the third most populous city in the United States. The Port of Chicago connects the state to international ports via two main routes: from the Great Lakes, via the Saint Lawrence Seaway, to the Atlantic Ocean and from the Great Lakes to the Mississippi River, via the Illinois Waterway to the Illinois River. The Mississippi River, the Ohio River, and the Wabash River form parts of the boundaries of Illinois. For decades, Chicago's O'Hare International Airport has been ranked as one of the world's busiest airports. Illinois has long had a reputation as a bellwether both in social and cultural terms and, through the 1980s, in politics.

Boxing is a combat sport in which two people, usually wearing protective gloves, throw punches at each other for a predetermined amount of time in a boxing ring.

O'Shea is one of the fighting O'Shea brothers along with Rory O'Shea, Mike O'Shea and Tom O'Shea.

Amateur career

O'Shea had an outstanding amateur career, having won several Chicago Golden Gloves Open division titles. The titles he won include a championship at 126 lbs. in 1957, and at lightweight (135 lbs.) in 1958, 1959, 1960 & 1961. The 1958 title came at the expense of his brother Tom, who later moved down in weight and won the 1960 Open Division 126 lb. title. In 1960 he also was the National Golden Gloves Lightweight Champion.

The Chicago Golden Gloves is an amateur boxing tournament, considered by many boxing aficionados as one of the three most elite Golden Gloves titles, along with the Intercity Golden Gloves and the New York Golden Gloves. The tournament is also more formally known as the Chicagoland Golden Gloves Charities Tournament. It was initiated by the Chicago Tribune sports editor Arch Ward in 1923. The program and tournament are currently run by Directors Ted Gimza, Dr. Glenn Bynum and Sam Colonna.

O'Shea was the National AAU Light Welterweight Champion in 1959, and won the 1960 132 lb championship. Also in 1960 he won the Chicago Golden Gloves Tournament of Champions in the 135 lb. division. In 1961 he won the Intercity Golden Gloves (alternate) in the 135 lb. division.

Pro career

O'Shea turned pro in 1961 was undefeated until being TKO'd by John White in 1962. After another win streak, he again lost via KO to White in 1963. He retired in 1965.

Referee and judge

O'Shea served as a boxing judge and referee after his pro career concluded.

The New York Golden Gloves boxing tournament was considered by many boxing aficionados as one of the most elite Golden Gloves titles, along with the Chicago Golden Gloves. Named for the small golden gloves given out to the winners of each weight category, the New York Golden Gloves continued for decades under the sponsorship of the New York Daily News. Originally the tournament was known as "The New York Daily News Welfare Association's Golden Gloves Tournament of Champions" or simply "The New York."

Richard "Dick" McTaggart, MBE is a retired Scottish amateur boxer. He competed in the 1956 and 1960 Olympics in the lightweight division and won a gold and a bronze medal, respectively. In 1956 he received the Val Barker Trophy for best boxing style at the Olympics. At the 1964 Olympics McTaggart moved to the light-welterweight category, but lost in the third bout to the eventual winner Jerzy Kulej. McTaggart won the British ABA title in 1956, 1958, 1960, 1963 and 1965, and retired with a record of 610 wins out of 634 bouts.

The Golden Gloves in British Columbia, Canada has been a key amateur boxing tournament since its inception in 1939. The debut Golden Gloves champions in 1939 were Wayne Morris, Alan Dunn, Phil Vickery, Erick Burnell, Bob Hickey, Henry Devine and Kenny Lindsay. The first Golden Boy was Phil Vickery.

As a Franchise of the National Golden Gloves, the New England Golden Gloves is the annual amateur boxing competition for the New England States. It has been held every year since 1945 at the Lowell Memorial Auditorium in Lowell, Massachusetts. Competitors over the years include boxing greats, such as; Rocky Marciano, Sugar Ray Leonard, Marvin Hagler, and Micky Ward. The competitions typically take place in January through February, with the winners heading to the National Golden Gloves in May.
