Christopher George Joseph Challis BSC, FRPS [1] (18 March 1919 – 31 May 2012) [2] was a British cinematographer who worked on more than 70 feature films from the 1940s onwards. [3]

Career

After working as camera operator on several films for Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger, he made his debut as director of photography on The End of the River (1947) one of their projects as producers. After filming of The End of the River concluded, Challis was camera operator under Jack Cardiff on The Red Shoes . He did not object to the demotion as he wanted to work on the film. [4] Following this he went back to being director of photography. He was cinematographer on most of Powell and Pressburger's later films, including The Small Back Room (1949), The Elusive Pimpernel (1950), The Tales of Hoffmann (1951), Oh... Rosalinda!! (1955), The Battle of the River Plate (1956) and Ill Met by Moonlight (1957).

His expertise in colour cinematography meant that he was frequently chosen by British film makers of the 1950s to work on their projects, and he worked on a number of successful comedies, including Genevieve (1953), The Captain's Table (1958) and Those Magnificent Men in their Flying Machines (1965). He worked on projects in other genres as well, such as The Spanish Gardener (1956), the war film Sink the Bismarck! (1960), Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (1968), and Billy Wilder's The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes (1970). He was nominated for several BAFTA Awards for Best British Cinematography, including a win in 1966 for Stanley Donen's film Arabesque .

Challis is credited with being the first person to create specially modified 5000-watt 'Senior' luminaries to provide cinematic lighting underwater while filming The Deep in 1976. [5]

Martin Scorsese said: "It is not possible even to begin to take the full measure of the greatness of British filmmaking without thinking of Chris Challis," and: "Chris Challis brought a vibrancy to the celluloid palette that was entirely his own, and which helped make Britain a leader in that long, glorious period of classic world cinema." [6]

Challis was also an accomplished and enthusiastic still photographer. He joined The Royal Photographic Society in 1936, gaining his Associateship in 1945 and Fellowship in 1948. He remained a member until his death. [7]

Publications

His autobiography, Are They Really So Awful?: A Cameraman's Chronicle, was published by Janus Publishing Company ( ISBN   1-85756-193-7) in March 1995.

Challis also features in the book Conversations with Cinematographers (Scarecrow Press) by David A. Ellis (2012).

Powell and Pressburger British filmmaking duo

The British film-making partnership of Michael Powell (1905–1990) and Emeric Pressburger (1902–1988)—together often known as The Archers, the name of their production company—made a series of influential films in the 1940s and 1950s. Their collaborations—24 films between 1939 and 1972—were mainly derived from original stories by Pressburger with the script written by both Pressburger and Powell. Powell did most of the directing while Pressburger did most of the work of the producer and also assisted with the editing, especially the way the music was used. Unusually, the pair shared a writer-director-producer credit for most of their films. The best-known of these are The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp (1943), A Canterbury Tale (1944), I Know Where I'm Going! The Small Back Room, released in the United States as Hour of Glory, is a 1949 film by the British producer-writer-director team of Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger starring David Farrar and Kathleen Byron and featuring Jack Hawkins and Cyril Cusack. It was based on the 1943 novel of the same name by Nigel Balchin. The theme is the unsung heroes of the last war, the 'backroom boys', gradually coming into their own.

Roger Deakins British cinematographer

Deakins has been admitted to both the British Society of Cinematographers and to the American Society of Cinematographers. Douglas Slocombe

Ralph Douglas Vladimir Slocombe OBE, BSC, ASC, GBCT was a British cinematographer, particularly known for his work at Ealing Studios in the 1940s and 1950s, as well as the first three Indiana Jones films. He won BAFTA Awards in 1964, 1975, and 1979, and was nominated for an Academy Award on three occasions.

The Royal Photographic Society of Great Britain, commonly known as the Royal Photographic Society (RPS), is one of the world's oldest photographic societies. Remi Adefarasin, BSC, is an English cinematographer. He is educated in Photography & Filmmaking at Harrow Technical College. He started his career as a camera trainee at BBC-TV's Ealing Studios. His work on Elizabeth (1998) won him awards for Best Cinematography from BAFTA and the British Society of Cinematographers, as well as a "Golden Frog" from Camerimage and an Academy Award nomination. For his work on Elizabeth, he became the first black person to be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Cinematography.

Richard Pope, B.S.C. is a British cinematographer who has worked with British film director Mike Leigh. He has twice been nominated for an Academy Award, for The Illusionist and Mr. Turner.

(2008). His other works include The Invisible Woman, Testament of Youth and Mission: Impossible – Fallout.

Brian TufanoBSC is an English cinematographer, best known for his work on the films of Danny Boyle and Menhaj Huda. Tufano has been admitted to the British Society of Cinematographers and won the 2001 BAFTA Award for Outstanding Contribution to Film and Television. His most well-known works include Trainspotting, A Life Less Ordinary and Billy Elliot.
