Iași, also referred to mostly historically as Jassy, is the second largest city in Romania and the seat of Iași County. Located in the historical region of Moldavia, it has traditionally been one of the leading centres of Romanian social, cultural, academic and artistic life. The city was the capital of the Principality of Moldavia from 1564 to 1859, then of the United Principalities from 1859 to 1862, and the capital of Romania from 1916 to 1918.

The Bârlad is a river in eastern Romania, a left tributary of the river Siret. Its total length is 207 km (129 mi), and its drainage basin area is 7,220 km2 (2,790 sq mi). Its source is in the low hills between the Siret and Prut rivers, southwest of Iași. It flows generally south, through the cities of Negrești, Vaslui, Bârlad and Tecuci. The Bârlad flows through the Romanian counties of Neamț, Vaslui and Galați. It flows into the Siret near Suraia.
The Jijia is a river in Ukraine and the Moldavia region of Romania, a right tributary of the Prut. It rises in Ukraine at an altitude of 410 metres, flows south in Botoșani County through the town of Dorohoi and meets the Prut in Gorban, Iași County. It has a length of 287 km (178 mi), of which 275 km in Romania, and a drainage area of about 5,770 km2 (2,230 sq mi), of which 5,757 km2 (2,223 sq mi) in Romania. Major tributaries are the rivers Sitna, Miletin and Bahlui.
The Bahlui is the largest river of the city of Iași, in eastern Romania. It is a right tributary of the river Jijia. Its name is derived from Cuman and it means "muddy river". The Bahlui has a length of 119 km and a catchment area of 1967 km². The average discharge is about 4.88 m³/s.
The Gurguiata is a left tributary of the river Bahlui in Romania. It discharges into the Bahlui near Belcești. Its length is 33 km (21 mi) and its basin size is 127 km2 (49 sq mi). The Gurguiata valley has been heavily modified by human activity. There are many storage reservoirs in the valley, used mainly for flood control and for intensive fishing. The largest of these is Lake Plopi, located northeast of Belcești.
Belcești is a commune in Iași County, Western Moldavia, Romania, situated on the Bahlui River 44 km from Iași. One of the county's largest communes, with a population of 10,555 in 2011, it is composed of six villages: Belcești, Liteni, Munteni, Satu Nou, Tansa, and Ulmi.
