The Civic Democratic Party (ODS) leadership election of 2014 was a result of party's electoral defeat in 2013 legislative election. Candidates include former Minister of Education and Chairman of Masaryk University Petr Fiala, former Prime Minister candidate Miroslava Němcová and MEP Edvard Kožušník. Fiala was nominated by 12 regional organisations and thus was considered a front-runner. Fiala was also endorsed by acting leader of ODS Martin Kuba. Edvard Kožušník was endorsed by Liberec Region organisation of ODS. Over 500 delegates voted. [1] [2] [3]

Masaryk University university in Brno, Czech Republic

Masaryk University is the second largest university in the Czech Republic, a member of the Compostela Group and the Utrecht Network. Founded in 1919 in Brno as the second Czech university, it now consists of nine faculties and 35,115 students. It is named after Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk, the first president of an independent Czechoslovakia as well as the leader of the movement for a second Czech university.

Petr Fiala is a Czech politician, political scientist and university professor who has been Leader of the Civic Democratic Party (ODS) since 2014. He has served as Member of the Chamber of Deputies since 2013. From 2012 to 2013 Fiala was Minister of Education, Youth and Sports in the Cabinet of Prime Minister Petr Nečas and Rector of Masaryk University in Brno.

Miroslava Němcová Czech politician

Miroslava Němcová is a Czech politician who served as 6th Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies of the Czech Republic from 2010 to 2013. She has been a member of the Chamber of Deputies since 1998.

Petr Fiala won a landslide victory when he received 437 votes. Fiala said that he wants to change political culture in ODS and that he wants to be a leader similar to Václav Klaus and Margaret Thatcher. [4] [5]

Margaret Hilda Thatcher, Baroness Thatcher, was a British stateswoman who served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1979 to 1990 and Leader of the Conservative Party from 1975 to 1990. She was the longest-serving British prime minister of the 20th century and the first woman to hold that office. A Soviet journalist dubbed her "The 'Iron Lady'", a nickname that became associated with her uncompromising politics and leadership style. As Prime Minister, she implemented policies known as Thatcherism.

Background

Previous leader of ODS and Prime Minister Petr Nečas had to resign as a result of 2013 political corruption scandal. Martin Kuba became acting leader of ODS while Miroslava Němcová was nominated to the position of Prime Minister. President Miloš Zeman refused to appoint Němcová as a Prime Minister and called on early elections on 25–26 October 2013. ODS was heavily defeated and gained only 16 Seats in Chamber of Deputies. Leadership of the party then resigned. [6]

Petr Nečas is a Czech former politician who served as 9th Prime Minister of the Czech Republic and Leader of the Civic Democratic Party from 2010 to 2013, and as Member of the Chamber of Deputies (MP) from 1993 to 2013.

2013 Czech political corruption scandal

The 2013 Czech political corruption scandal started with a raid against organized crime which was conducted in the Czech Republic in June 2013 by the Police Unit for Combating Organized Crime and the Chief Public Prosecutor's Office in Olomouc. It involved several highly positioned state officers and politicians, as well as controversial entrepreneurs and lobbyists. The scandal affected the top levels of Czech politics, including Prime Minister Petr Nečas and his coalition government. On 17 June 2013, it resulted in the resignation of the Prime Minister and the cabinet. Nečas also quit as leader of the Civic Democratic Party (ODS).

Martin Kuba is a Czech politician who served as Minister of Industry and Trade of the Czech Republic from November 2011 to July 2013. He was appointed to Petr Nečas's Cabinet on 16 November 2011.

Miroslava Němcová announced on 6 December 2013 that she doesn't intend to run for a position of party's leader. Some sources stated that her decision was to give opportunity to former Minister of Education Petr Fiala whose candiday was speculated. [7] Petr Fiala announced his candidacy on 7 December 2013. He stated that ODS ceased to function as a political party and [8] Fiala quickly gathered support from regional organisations and many influential members of the party. Jiří Pospíšil expressed his support to Fiala. [9] On 19 December 2013, Němcová reportedly announced her candidature to Civic Democratic members of parliament. She refused to announce her candidacy publicly. [10]

Jiří Pospíšil Czech politician

Jiří Pospíšil is a Czech politician, who has been Leader of TOP 09 since November 2017. As a deputy for the Civic Democratic Party, Pospíšil served twice as Czech Minister of Justice: between 2006 and 2009 under Prime Minister Mirek Topolánek, and then again from 2010 to 2012 in the government of Petr Nečas. Pospíšil was a member of the Chamber of Deputies (MP) from 2002 to 2014.

Edvard Kožušník announced his candidacy on 8 January 2014. He received nomination from Liberec regional organisation. Fiala stated that he is glad to not be the only candidate. [11] [12] Fiala was nominated by 12 regional organisations. Němcová didn't receive any regional nomination. [13]

Edvard Kožušník is a Czech politician for the Civic Democratic Party (ODS). He served as a Member of the European Parliament from 2009 to 2014 and is the former Chief of Staff to the President of the Czech Senate, Přemysl Sobotka. He was an ODS candidate for European Parliament election in 2009 and received the seventh largest number of preference votes in the party.

Fiala's nomination speech received standing ovation while Němcová's speech was noted by hurtful feeling. Kožušník's speech was received negatively. Fiala won the election by a large margin, being elected in the first round. [18] Němcová was visibly disappointed and stated that the result isn't fair when she considers how much she did for the party. [19]

In December 2016, Czech bookmaker company Fortuna wrote a course for Klaus Jr. to replace Fiala on 20:1. Klaus Jr.. decided to not run against Fiala. Approximately 540 delegates were allowed to vote. Fiala received 451 votes and was elected for another term.

Next Czech presidential election

Presidential elections will be held in the Czech Republic no later than January 2023. The incumbent president Miloš Zeman is not eligible to run for another term. The election will most likely be direct. There has been speculation that Miloš Zeman will not finish his second term.

A by-election for the Prague 9 Senate seat in the Czech Republic will be held on 5 and 6 April 2019. The incumbent Senator Zuzana Baudyšová announced her resignation on 29 January 2019. She was elected as a candidate of ANO 2011. Baudyšová resigned due to health difficulties.
