The Class 962 (962形) was a six-car Japanese Shinkansen train built in 1979 as the prototype for the new (200 series) trains to be operated on the Tōhoku Shinkansen and Jōetsu Shinkansen routes.
The Class 962 trainset incorporated technology developed in the earlier Class 951 and Class 961 set, with extensive snow-proofing features to cope with revenue service in the wintry areas served by the Tōhoku and Jōetsu Shinkansen routes.The design limited the maximum axle load to 16.3 tonnes.
Bogie shrouds and diaphragms between cars were fitted to this set as a noise reduction measure, but these features were not used on the 200 series design due to the complications this added to maintenance.The DT9019 and DT9020 bogies were derived from the DT200A design used on the earlier 0 series trains.
Internally, only cars 1 and 4 were fitted out with passenger seating. The seating in car 1 included 3+2 abreast standard-class seating arranged with seat pitches of 1,000 mm (39.4 in) and 970 mm (38.2 in), 2+2 abreast standard-class seating with a seat pitch of 1,000 mm (39.4 in), and 2+2 abreast Green class (first class) seating with a seat pitch of 1,160 mm (45.7 in). Car 4 featured 3+2 abreast seating using the earlier 0 series flip-over style seats with a seat pitch of 970 mm (38.2 in) and new reclining non-rotating seats also with a pitch of 970 mm (38.2 in). The latter were used on production 200 series trains with increased seat pitch.

Cars 2, 4, and 6 were equipped with scissors type pantographs.
The train was unveiled on 22 February 1979. Test running on the Tōhoku Shinkansen test track at Oyama continued until June 1980. After this, the train was used for test running on the Jōetsu Shinkansen prior to the opening of the line.
From January 1983, the train was converted to become the 7-car Class 925-10 "Doctor Yellow" track and overhead line inspection train S2 with the insertion of track condition recording car 921-41 built by Tokyu Car Corporation in November 1980.This train was withdrawn on 25 January 2003.
The 200 series (200系) was a Shinkansen high-speed train type introduced by Japanese National Railways (JNR) for the Tohoku Shinkansen and Joetsu Shinkansen high-speed rail lines in Japan, and operated by East Japan Railway Company until 2013. They actually predated the 100 series trains, having been built between 1980 and 1986. It was one of the two recipients of the 23rd Laurel Prize presented by the Japan Railfan Club, the first Shinkansen type to receive that award. The last remaining sets were retired from regular service in March 2013, and were completely withdrawn from service in April 2013.
The 400 series (400系) was a Japanese Shinkansen high-speed train type operated by East Japan Railway Company between 1992 and 2010 on Tsubasa services on Japan's first mini-shinkansen line, the Yamagata Shinkansen branch from the main Tohoku Shinkansen.
The 700 series is a Japanese Shinkansen high-speed train type built between 1997 and 2006, and entering service in 1999. Originally designated as "N300" during the development phase, they formed the next generation of shinkansen vehicles jointly designed by JR Central and JR-West for use on the Tokaido Shinkansen, Hakata Minami Line and the San'yō Shinkansen. Though it has since been withdrawn from service on the Tōkaidō Shinkansen, it still operates on the San'yō Shinkansen and Hakata Minami Line.
The E1 series (E1系) was a high-speed Shinkansen train type operated by East Japan Railway Company in Japan from July 1994 until September 2012. They were the first double-deck trains built for Japan's Shinkansen. They were generally, along with their fellow double-deck class the E4 series, known by the marketing name "Max". The fleet was withdrawn from regular service on 28 September 2012.
The E2 series is a Japanese high-speed Shinkansen train type operated by East Japan Railway Company on the Tohoku Shinkansen high-speed lines in Japan since 1997. They are formed in 8- and 10-car sets. The 8-car sets were used on the Hokuriku Shinkansen, and the 10-car sets are on Tohoku Shinkansen services. The 10-car sets can be coupled to E3 series Komachi sets using couplers hidden behind retracting nose doors.
The E4 series (E4系) is a high-speed shinkansen train type operated by East Japan Railway Company in Japan. They were the second series of completely bi-level Shinkansen trainsets to be built in Japan. They operate on the Tōhoku and Jōetsu Shinkansen, and occasionally on the Nagano Shinkansen. E4 series trains feature double-decker cars to accommodate additional commuter traffic around Tokyo and other urban areas. They were often coupled to 400 series trains on the Tōhoku Shinkansen between Tokyo and Fukushima before the latter retired in April 2010.
The N700 series is a Japanese Shinkansen high-speed train with tilting capability developed jointly by JR Central and JR West for use on the Tokaido and San'yō Shinkansen lines since 2007, and also operated by JR Kyushu on the Kyushu Shinkansen line.
The 255 series (255系), branded Bōsō View Express (房総ビューエクスプレス), is a DC electric multiple unit (EMU) train type operated by East Japan Railway Company in Japan. It was introduced into commercial service on 2 July 1993, and was specifically designed to serve on Limited express services from Tokyo to the Bōsō Peninsula.
The 253 series (253系) is a DC electric multiple unit (EMU) train type operated by East Japan Railway Company. It was introduced on 19 March 1991 for use exclusively on the Narita Express, a limited express service linking Narita International Airport with stations in the Tokyo area. The 253 series trains were withdrawn from Narita Express services on 30 June 2010, with two trains redeployed on Nikkō and Kinugawa limited express services from June 2011.

The H5 series (H5系) is a Japanese Shinkansen high-speed train type owned by Hokkaido Railway Company for use on Tohoku and Hokkaido Shinkansen services since 26 March 2016. Based on the earlier E5 series trains, a total of four 10-car sets were built by Hitachi and Kawasaki Heavy Industries at a cost of approximately 18 billion yen. The first two sets were delivered in October 2014.
