Federal College of Education Technical ,Ekiadolor (FCET) is a defunct government owned College of Education located in Edo State, Southern part of Nigeria. [1] The Institution was established in 1980 under the administration of Professor Ambrose Folorunsho Alli of the defunct Bendel State. [2] The College was one of the government approved tertiary institutions in Nigeria. The Institution served as a Centre for training of School Teachers in Nigeria. The College of Education awards National Certificates in Education (NCE) to its graduates. [3] NCE is a mandatory requirement for those who want to work as a teacher in a Nigerian school. [4] The College was one of the three tertiary Colleges of Education in Edo State, with the other two being College of Education, Igueben and College of Agriculture, Iguoriakhi. [5]

College Upgrade and Tayo Akpata University of Education Controversy

In 2015, the College of Education, Ekiadolor was closed down by the then Governor of Edo State, Comrade Adams A. Oshiomhole, with plans to upgrade the college to a University of Education. It was proposed that the College of Education will be upgraded to Tayo Akpata University of Education, Ekiadolor. However, the plan never materialized. [6] This led to series of protests by the indigenes of Ekiadolor and neighboring communities for the restoration of the institution to its original state as a College of Education. [7] [8] [9]

Establishment of Federal College of Education, Ekiadolor

In 2020, the Federal Government of Nigeria, through the Minister of Education, announced plans to establish six new Federal Colleges of Education in Nigeria. One of the six Federal Colleges of Education was set up using the facilities of Tayo Akpata University of Education in Ekiadolor. [10] [11]

College Library

The College of Education Library, Ekiadolor, is the nerve centre of the parent institution. The library is made up of Administrative unit, Circulation unit, Periodicals and Special collection section and it houses books, periodicals, manuscripts, journals, newspapers, maps, prints, documents, e-books and films which help students and staffs of the institution. Ambrose Folorunsho Alli was a Nigerian medical professor who served as Executive Governor of the defunct Nigerian state of Bendel State between 1979 and 1983. He was the first civilian governor.

The Alvan Ikoku University of Education, Owerri, formerly the Alvan Ikoku Federal College of Education, Owerri is located in Owerri, the capital of Imo State, Nigeria. It was established in April, 1963 as the Advanced Teachers Training College by the defunct Eastern Nigeria Government on the grounds of the Old Shell Camp, Owerri. It has since expanded across the Orlu Road on the banks of the Nworie River. It awards the National Certificate in Education (NCE) and the Professional Diploma in Education (PDE) and, in affiliation, with the University of Nigeria, Nsukka the Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) since 1984. Federal College of Education (Special), Oyo also known as FCE OYO was established on 5 October 1977, as Federal Advanced Teacher's college (Special). The institution, according to a UNDP/UNESCO 1996 report (NIR/87/008) "... Has the best qualify Staff in Special Education not only in Nigeria but in West, North, East and Central Africa." The College is the only one of its kind in Nigeria and sub-Saharan Africa. It has the largest conglomeration of disabled students that could be found in any Higher Institution in Nigeria and the largest concentration of specialized facilities for teaching and training of teachers of the Handicapped in Nigeria. During its 40th anniversary celebration, the college gave special recognition award to former President Olusegun Obasanjo whose military administration brought about the upgrading of the Institution from the then Federal Advanced Teachers College to a College of Education with the mandate to award the National Certificate of Education (NCE) in 1977.

Federal College of Education, Zaria is a College of Science and Art based in Zaria, Nigeria. It was established by the then Northern Region Government of Nigeria in November 1962. It was initially named Northern Secondary Teachers College and later known as Advanced Teachers’ College Zaria, under the administrative and policy control of Ahmadu Bello University Zaria, until 1991. National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE) is the regulator of Nigerian colleges of education. It formulates National Policy framework for the full development of teacher education and training of teachers. NCCE defines minimum standards for all programmes of teacher education and accredit their certificates and other academic awards.
