Comondú is a municipality of the Mexican state of Baja California Sur. It had a population of 70,816 inhabitants in 2010 census (INEGI). With a land area of 16,858.3 km² (6,509.03 sq mi), it is the seventh-largest municipality in area in Mexico. The municipal seat is located in Ciudad Constitución.

Municipalities are the second-level administrative divisions of Mexico, where the first-level administrative division is the state. As of the establishment of two new municipalities in Chiapas in September 2017, there are 2,448 municipalities in Mexico, not including the 16 delegaciones of Mexico City. The internal political organization and their responsibilities are outlined in the 115th article of the 1917 Constitution and detailed in the constitutions of the states to which they belong.

Misión San José de Comondú

Mission San José de Comondú was one of the Jesuit missions established early in the 18th century in Baja California Sur, Mexico, west of Loreto on an arroyo flowing to the Pacific coast. "Comondú" was a place name of the native Cochimí, who were the objects of the missionaries' efforts. Over the course of its existence, the mission was twice relocated.

Politics

The Municipality of Comondú was one of the first three municipalities created in the then Federal South Territory of Baja California as part of a presidential decree of 1971, after a constitutional amendment allowing the creation and election of local councils in the territory, hitherto divided into political delegations. Dated January 1, 1972 Comondú was formally the first City Council. The township government rests with the council; it consists of the Mayor, a trustee and a council composed of fourteen aldermen; the city council is elected for a period of three years by popular vote (direct and secret), starting every April 30 of the election year.

The municipality had 1,516 localities, the largest of which (with 2010 populations in parentheses) were: Ciudad Constitución (40,935), Ciudad Insurgentes (8,741), Puerto San Carlos (5,538), classified as urban, and Puerto Adolfo López Mateos (2,212), Villa Ignacio Zaragoza (1,266), and Villa Morelos (1,153), classified as rural. Ensenada Municipality Municipality in Baja California, Mexico

The municipality of Ensenada, with a land area of 52,482.40 km2 (20,263.57 sq mi), takes up the majority of the state of Baja California. It is the largest municipality in Mexico and in the Americas by area. It contains all of Baja California apart from a strip at the north and, at the northeast extremity of the state, the municipality of Mexicali. It is bordered by the Pacific Ocean on the west, the Gulf of California on the east, and by all of the other municipalities in Baja California on the North. Its municipal seat is Ensenada, which lies near the northwest corner of the municipality, although almost all of the municipality's territory lies far to its southeast.
