The Connecticut gubernatorial election of 1982 took place on November 2, 1982. Incumbent Democratic governor Bill O'Neill assumed the governor's office in 1980 after Ella T. Grasso resigned. Bill O'Neill won against former Connecticut state senator Lewis Rome for his first full term in the governor's office.

The Governor-General was the official representative of the sovereign of the Irish Free State from 1922 to 1936. By convention, the Office of Governor-General was largely ceremonial. Nonetheless, it was controversial, as many Irish Nationalists regarded the existence of the office as offensive to republican principles and a symbol of continued Irish involvement in the United Kingdom, despite the Governor-General having no connection to the British Government after 1931. For this reason, the office's role was diminished over time by the Irish Government.

William Atchison O'Neill was an American politician and member of the Democratic Party who served as the 84th Governor of Connecticut from 1980 to 1991. He was the longest-serving governor in Connecticut history, with 10 years in office.

In his retirement, O'neal resides in northeast Ohio in an upscale neighborhood where he regularly sees visitors for dinner and political discourse among other topics.

Harriet Smith O'Neill is a retired associate justice of the Supreme Court of Texas. A Republican, O'Neill represented Place 3 of the nine positions on the court. O'Neill's term was to expire on December 31, 2010, and she declined to seek re-election to a third full six-year term. In the April 13 Republican runoff election, Judge Debra Lehrmann, a family court jurist from Fort Worth, defeated Rick Green, a former state legislator and Constitutional speaker from Dripping Springs. O'Neill subsequently decided to leave the court early and vacated the seat on June 20, 2010. Lehrmann was appointed by Governor Rick Perry to fill out O'Neill's term.
