Czarnowo [t͡ʂarˈnɔvɔ] is a village in the administrative district of Gmina Pomiechówek, within Nowy Dwór Mazowiecki County, Masovian Voivodeship, in east-central Poland. [1] It lies approximately 2 kilometres (1 mi) south-east of Brody-Parcele (the gmina seat), 8 km (5 mi) north-east of Nowy Dwór Mazowiecki, and 33 km (21 mi) north-west of Warsaw. The village is on the north bank of the Narew River, a short distance east of the point where the Wkra River flows into it from the north.

Nowy Dwór Mazowiecki County is a unit of territorial administration and local government (powiat) in Masovian Voivodeship, east-central Poland. It came into being on January 1, 1999, as a result of the Polish local government reforms passed in 1998. Its administrative seat and largest town is Nowy Dwór Mazowiecki, which lies 33 kilometres (21 mi) north-west of Warsaw. The county also contains the towns of Nasielsk, lying 21 km (13 mi) north-east of Nowy Dwór Mazowiecki, and Zakroczym, 5 km (3 mi) west of Nowy Dwór Mazowiecki. Warsaw-Modlin Airport is located within the county. The county covers an area of 691.65 square kilometres (267.0 sq mi). As of 2006 its total population is 75,736, out of which the population of Nowy Dwór Mazowiecki is 27,545, that of Nasielsk is 7,364, that of Zakroczym is 3,367, and the rural population is 37,460.

History

The Battle of Czarnowo was fought on 23–24 December 1806 during the War of the Fourth Coalition, part of the Napoleonic Wars. French soldiers under the command of Marshal Louis-Nicolas Davout forced a crossing of the Wkra near Pomiechowo. When they advanced eastward to Czarnowo they were fiercely resisted by Russian troops led by Lieutenant General Alexander Ivanovich Ostermann-Tolstoy in an all-night contest. In the early morning hours of the 24th, Ostermann-Tolstoy ordered a retreat. [2] The fighting caused about 1,400 casualties on each side. [3]

Battle of Czarnowo

The Battle of Czarnowo on the night of 23–24 December 1806 saw troops of the First French Empire under the eye of Emperor Napoleon I launch an evening assault crossing of the Wkra River against Lieutenant General Alexander Ivanovich Ostermann-Tolstoy's defending Russian Empire forces. The attackers, part of Marshal Louis-Nicolas Davout's III Corps, succeeded in crossing the Wkra at its mouth and pressed eastward to the village of Czarnowo. After an all-night struggle, the Russian commander withdrew his troops to the east, ending this War of the Fourth Coalition action. Czarnowo is located on the north bank of the Narew River 33 kilometres (21 mi) north-northwest of Warsaw, Poland.

War of the Fourth Coalition part of the Napoleonic Wars

The Fourth Coalition fought against Napoleon's French Empire and was defeated in a war spanning 1806–1807. Coalition partners included Prussia, Russia, Saxony, Sweden, and Great Britain. Several members of the coalition had previously been fighting France as part of the Third Coalition, and there was no intervening period of general peace. On 9 October 1806, Prussia joined a renewed coalition, fearing the rise in French power after the defeat of Austria and establishment of the French-sponsored Confederation of the Rhine. Prussia and Russia mobilized for a fresh campaign, and Prussian troops massed in Saxony.

The Napoleonic Wars (1803–1815) were a series of major conflicts pitting the French Empire and its allies, led by Napoleon I, against a fluctuating array of European powers formed into various coalitions, financed and usually led by the United Kingdom. The wars stemmed from the unresolved disputes associated with the French Revolution and its resultant conflict. The wars are often categorised into five conflicts, each termed after the coalition that fought Napoleon: the Third Coalition (1805), the Fourth (1806–07), the Fifth (1809), the Sixth (1813), and the Seventh (1815).

David Geoffrey Chandler was a British historian whose study focused on the Napoleonic era.

Francis Loraine Petre was a British civil servant in India and a military historian upon his retirement. He wrote a two-volume regimental history of the Norfolk Regiment, but is best known for his works on the Napoleonic Wars. The grandson of the 11th Baron Petre, he was educated at Oscott College and joined the Bar in 1880. He took the civil service exam and subsequently joined the Indian Civil Service. He retired as Commissioner of Allahabad in 1900.
