Insurgency

On 28 March 2019, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham claimed responsibility for an attack against pro-government forces belonging to the 4th brigade in the Deir ez-Zor Governorate that reportedly left a number of pro-government fighters dead. This also marked the first time since 2014 that al-Nusra has had a presence in the area. Two days later, a Free Syrian Army-aligned insurgent group was established called "The Revolutionaries in the land of Deir Ez-Zor". The group announced its establishment on twitter and released a statement as well, claiming to have killed 9 pro-government forces and injuring 5 others in the neighborhoods of Hawiqa and Harabesh in the city of Deir ez-Zor.

Hayat Tahrir al-Sham Salafi jihadist militant faction during the Syrian Civil War

Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham, commonly referred to as Tahrir al-Sham and abbreviated HTS, is an active Salafist jihadist militant group involved in the Syrian Civil War. The group was formed on 28 January 2017 as a merger between Jabhat Fateh al-Sham, the Ansar al-Din Front, Jaysh al-Sunna, Liwa al-Haqq, and the Nour al-Din al-Zenki Movement. After the announcement, additional groups and individuals joined. The merged group is currently led by Jabhat Fatah al-Sham and former Ahrar al-Sham leaders, although the High Command consists of leaders from other groups. Many groups and individuals defected from Ahrar al-Sham, representing their more conservative and Salafist elements. Currently, a number of analysts and media outlets still continue to refer to this group by its previous names, al-Nusra Front, or Jabhat Fateh al-Sham. The Ansar al-Din Front and Nour al-Din al-Zenki Movement have since split off from Tahrir al-Sham. It had an estimated 20,000 members in 2019.

Free Syrian Army militant rebel faction in Syria

The Free Syrian Army (FSA) is a loose faction in the Syrian Civil War founded on 29 July 2011 by officers of the Syrian Armed Forces whose stated goal was to bring down the government of Bashar al-Assad. A formal organization at its founding, its structure gradually dissipated by late 2012, and the FSA identity has since been used by various opposition groups.

On 12 April, the Revolutionaries in the Land of Deir ez-Zor claimed to have killed a Syrian Army colonel named Ali Samir al-Jeeb on the Deir ez-Zor-Damascus highway. Three days later, they also claimed to have killed a Brigadier General, a Major and a 1st Lieutenant from the Syrian Army, as well as wounding dozens others.
