Disney Channel is a British-managed Polish television kids' channel, owned and operated by The Walt Disney Company and a localized version of the US channel of the same name.

Contents

It was launched on 2 December 2006, [1] on Canal+ Premium, Polsat Box, Orange TV and some local cable providers. [2] Within the launch, Disney Channel marks 2nd popular in Poland, next to MiniMini+.

It previously broadcast 16 hours a day, from 6:00am to 10:00 pm (UTC+01:00), and began at 24 hours since 9 May 2010. It became a non-commercial channel since December 2, 2010, separating the EMEA feed. Disney Channel have won three times in Telekamery's Tele Tydzień in the "Children's Channel" category. [3] [4]

Disney Channel programs are also available via Disney+ since 14 June 2022.

History

Pre-launch

Before the channel's launch, Disney Co. Ltd. made a block-time agreement to the television station TVP1, to air in their programming block "Walt Disney Przedstawia" (transl.Walt Disney Presents), began back on 5 January 1991, appearing twice a week especially on Saturdays.

In many years, the programming block changed its schedule and time. It was first show at 2:30 pm until August 1994, then is scheduled earlier from 1:00 to 1:30 pm since September 1994. At 12:10 pm from March 1998, at 10:20 am from September 1998, at 10:00 am from July 1999, and at 9:30 to 9:35 am in September 1999.

It also appeared on Sundays during "Wieczorynka" (transl.Evenings), until it was ended on 1 January 2005. [5]

Post-launch

The Disney Channel began on 2 December 2006 at 5:00pm (UTC+01:00), [2] which shares the promo feeds from the Scandinavia and Middle Eastern version, [6] and was firstly aired was the 2004 movie The Incredibles . The rating went up during the launch, and have an estimated 315,000 views. [2]

On 23 July 2010, Disney Co. Ltd. released Disney na Żądanie (transl.: Disney On Demand), a video on demand service which is exclusively for UPC Digital subscribers in the country. [7]

On 1 August 2010, Disney Channel was separated from Disney Channel EMEA.

On 1 October 2013, Disney Channel Poland launched in widescreen. [8]

On 1 October 2015, Disney Channel launched its HD channel. [9]

On 23 April 2022, Disney Channel began broadcasting with a Polish sign language (PJM) in the series Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug & Cat Noir on weekends, especially of some viewers who have hearing impairments. [10] Which is featuring Alicja Szurkiewicz from Fundacji Kultury bez Barier (lit.'Foundation of Culture Without Barriers') as she's responsible for the translation of the sign language.

Disney Junior (formerly Playhouse Disney)

A preschool television channel targeted to kids until 2 to 7 years old. First launched on December 2006 as a morning block on Disney Channel as Playhouse Disney. It was later launched as a television channel back on 1 September 2010. [11] Both rebranded to Disney Junior on 1 June 2011 at 6:00 am. (UTC+01:00). [12]

Disney XD

Disney XD is a sister television channel of, targeting for kids and teens 6–14 years old. It was launched on 19 September 2009, replacing Jetix. [13] It broadcasts both its own productions, series thematically addressed to the target group, [14] as well as series and movies known from Disney Channel.

As of 2022, the Polish along with the Dutch versions of Disney XD were the remaining channels in Europe, and outside North America. [15]

Jetix programming mainly originated from the Saban Entertainment library, airing live-action and animated series with some original programming. Disco polo is a genre of popular dance music, created in Poland in the 1980s. It was initially known as sidewalk music or backyard music. This genre, a type of Polish urban folk music, had great popularity in the 1990s, peaking in 1995–1997, then gradually declining in popularity through the early 21st century. The genre then had a resurgence in the winter of 2007. The Polish PWN dictionary defines the genre as a Polish variant of disco music, with simple melodies and often ribald lyrics.

Disney Branded Television is an American television production company and a unit of Disney General Entertainment Content which oversees development, production and acquisition of content geared towards children, teenagers and families for Disney+, Disney Channel, Disney Jr. and Disney XD. The unit also oversees Disney-branded unscripted series, documentaries and specials for Disney+ and the Disney channels.

TVP Info is a Polish free-to-air television news channel, run by the public state broadcaster TVP. It is focused on newscasts, mainly broadcasting nationwide news bulletins. Until 20 December 2023, its main offices were located in the Television Information Agency building at Warsaw Insurgents Square; since 29 December 2023 the channel's activities are carried out from the main TVP building on Woronicza Street, Warsaw.

Television in Poland was introduced on an experimental basis in 1937. It was state owned, and was interrupted by the Second World War in 1939. Television returned to Poland in 1952 and for several decades was controlled by the communist government. Colour television was introduced in Poland in 1971. Private television stations in Poland appeared around the time of the fall of communism, with PTV Echo becoming the first private station in Poland.

Eska TV is a free-to-air 24-hour Polish language music channel launched on August 8, 2008, in Poland. In the beginning the channel was only on the Internet. After receiving the license for satellite broadcasting, 28 May 2009 got to offer DTH platform n. April 26, 2011 received a concession for digital terrestrial broadcasting. The channel will be in the first DTT multiplex.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Disney XD (Dutch TV channel)</span> TV channel in Netherlands and Flanders

Disney XD is a Dutch children's television channel owned by The Walt Disney Company. It broadcasts 14 hours a day, time-sharing with Dutch TV station Veronica, and is primarily aimed at children roughly between the ages of 7 and 15. The channel used to have a pay television 24-hour feed that was distributed throughout the Netherlands and Belgium (Flanders); however, it was closed down on 31 July 2018. Viewers in Belgium (Wallonia) and Luxembourg received Disney XD France, until that feed was later shut down in 2020.

Metro is a Polish television channel, launched on December 2, 2016. The first main owner of Metro was Agora SA - one of the largest and most renowned media companies in Poland, publisher of Gazeta Wyborcza. Shortly after the start of broadcasting, Agora SA sold to Discovery Communications a 49% of the shares in Metro. In August 2017, Discovery announced that it would buy on 1 September 2017 the remaining 51% for PLN 19 million under a share buyback agreement.

Discovery Life is a Polish television channel owned by TVN, a division of Warner Bros. Discovery, which produces documentary, feature and entertainment films and series. In Poland, the channel replaced Animal Planet in SD quality on 1 February 2015. At the time of launch, the station was available in 55.5% of households in Poland. On 16 January 2017, Discovery Life began broadcasting in HD quality, replacing the previously released SD version.
