District 1 (New York City Council)

District 1 (New York City Council) District 1 is an electoral district of the New York City Council. It currently consists of the area of Lower Manhattan, which includes, amongst other neighborhoods and sites, Chinatown, the Financial District, City Hall, and the site of the World Trade Center.

The current council member for District 1 is Margaret Chin (Dem., elected November 3, 2009), who is the first Asian American woman to sit on the council.

2009 New York City mayoral election

The 2009 election for Mayor of New York City took place on Tuesday, November 3. The incumbent Mayor, Michael Bloomberg, an independent who left the Republican Party in 2008, won reelection on the Republican and Independence Party/Jobs & Education lines with 50.7% of the vote over the retiring City Comptroller, Bill Thompson, a Democrat, who won 46.3%. Thompson had won the Democratic primary election on September 15 with 71% of the vote over City Councilman Tony Avella and Roland Rogers. This was the fifth straight mayoral victory by Republican candidates in New York despite the city's strongly Democratic leaning in national and state elections.

John Liu

John Chun Yah Liu is an American politician in New York City. A member of the Democratic Party, he is a member of the New York State Senate for the 11th District in northeast Queens. He previously served as the 43rd New York City Comptroller from 2010 to 2013, and as a member of the New York City Council from 2002 to 2009, representing District 20 in northeast Queens. He was the first Asian American New York City Council member and Comptroller, and one of the first two Asian American New York State Senators, as well as the first elected to legislative or citywide office in New York. Elections for members of the New York City Council were held in 2013. Primary elections were held on September 10, 2013, for all 51 districts of the city council. Many incumbents are termed out of office, while others were defeated in the primary, resulting in the largest turnover of council members since 2001, when 36 new members were nominated and elected to office in the council. Those who won their primaries without another contending party in the same district are considered the effective winner of the seat outright.

Elections for members of the New York City Council were held on November 7, 2017. Primary elections were held on September 12 for all 51 districts of the city council.

2021 New York City Council election Election to be held in New York City

General elections for members of the New York City Council will be held on November 2, 2021. The primary elections will be held on June 22, 2021. There are several special elections for seats vacated in 2020 and early 2021; these special elections will be the first to use ranked-choice voting in city council elections after it was approved by a ballot question in 2019. Due to redistricting after the 2020 Census, candidates will also run for two-year terms instead of four-year terms for the first time, stemming from the New York City Charter overhaul in 1989. Four-year terms will resume in the 2025 election after another two-year election in 2023.

2021 New York City Comptroller election

The 2021 New York City Comptroller election will consist of Democratic and Republican primaries for New York City Comptroller on June 22, 2021, followed by a general election on November 2, 2021. The primaries will be the first Comptroller election primaries to use ranked-choice voting.
