The Dr. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar Memorial is a memorial in London, United Kingdom. A statue is dedicated to B. R. Ambedkar, Indian polymath, and the architect of the Constitution of India, and is situated outside the house he lived in during the 1920s, which is open to the public. The memorial was inaugurated by the Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi on 14 November 2015.

B. R. Ambedkar Indian polymath and the architect of the Indian Constitution

Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar, popularly known as Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar, was an Indian jurist, economist, politician and social reformer who inspired the Dalit Buddhist movement and campaigned against social discrimination towards the untouchables (Dalits), while also supporting the rights of women and labour. He was independent India's first law and justice minister, the architect of the Constitution of India, and a founding father of the Republic of India. In India and elsewhere, he was often called Babasaheb, meaning "respected father" in Marathi and Hindi.

Ambedkar lived in the three-storey house during the year 1921–22, when he was studying at the London School of Economics. In this house, he studied around 20–21 hours and completed three degrees, M.Sc, Bar-at-Law and D.Sc. [1] [2] [3] [4]

The London School of Economics is a public research university located in London, England, and a member institution of the federal University of London. Founded in 1895 by Fabian Society members Sidney Webb, Beatrice Webb, Graham Wallas, and George Bernard Shaw for the betterment of society, LSE joined the University of London in 1900 and established its first degree courses under the auspices of the University in 1901. The LSE started awarding its own degrees in 2008, prior to which it awarded degrees of the University of London.

On 5 July 1920, Ambedkar left for London in order to complete his studies. He got admitted in London School of Economics and Political Science for M.Sc. Furthermore, he started studying for Barristry by being admitted in Gray's Inn. It was a time that amongst the untouchable of India, Ambedkar was the sole student went abroad to pursue his higher studies. He started staying at 10 King Henry's Road. [5] [6]

The Honourable Society of Gray's Inn, commonly known as Gray's Inn, is one of the four Inns of Court in London. To be called to the bar and practise as a barrister in England and Wales, a person must belong to one of these Inns. Located at the intersection of High Holborn and Gray's Inn Road in Central London, the Inn is both a professional body and a provider of office accommodation (chambers) for many barristers. It is ruled by a governing council called "Pension", made up of the Masters of the Bench, and led by the Treasurer, who is elected to serve a one-year term. The Inn is known for its gardens, or Walks, which have existed since at least 1597.

In the year 2015, this historic house was purchased by the Maharashtra government for Rs 35 crores. Later this house was converted into a monument. The memorial was inaugurated by the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 14 November 2015. On this occasion, Maharashtra's Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Rajkumar Badole, Sulekha Kumbhare, Ramdas Athawale and Ambedkarites and Buddhists in England were also present. Modi said "This monument in London will continue to give the message and inspiration of equality and social justice to the world". Also Fadnavis recorded his feelings in the visitor book: "A historical day. Bharat Ratna Mahamanav Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar's house that had made, where he stayed, he attended the London School of Economics. The house is now open to the public as a memorial. Society and the country can progress on the basis of equality and fraternity, through our constitution. Babasaheb has underlined it." [7] [8] [9]

Devendra Fadnavis Indian politician

Devendra Gangadharrao Fadnavis is an Indian politician who is the 18th and incumbent Chief Minister of Maharashtra, in office since October 2014. A member of Bharatiya Janata Party and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, at the age of 44, he became the second youngest Chief Minister of Maharashtra after Sharad Pawar. Fadnavis represents the Nagpur South West constituency in Maharashtra Legislative Assembly. He is only the second CM of Maharashtra, after Vasantrao Naik to have completed his full tenure as Chief Minister of Maharashtra.

Rajkumar Badole is an Indian politician. He is a Bharatiya Janata Party member and represents Arjuni Morgaon in 13th Maharashtra Legislative Assembly in Devendra Fadnavis ministry.

Sulekha Kumbhare politician

Sulekha Kumbhare is an Indian politician and founder of the Bahujan Republican Ekta Manch. Kumbhare was member of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly from the Kamthi constituency in Nagpur district as Republican Party of India.

There are many rare photographs and items from Ambedkar's life on display in the house, including a library of his work installed by the government of Maharashtra. There is a bust of Ambedkar in the main hall inside the memorial and on the outside of the memorial is a full-size statue of Ambedkar. The building also provides accommodation facilities to scholarship students from India pursuing higher education in London. [10]

Government of Maharashtra

The Government of Maharashtra is the Government for the state of Maharashtra in Western India. It is an elected government with 288 MLAs elected to the legislative assembly for a five-year term. Maharashtra has a bicameral legislature i.e. it consists of two houses: Vidhan Sabha and Vidhan Parishad. As is the case in a parliamentary system, the government is formed by the party, alliance or group of assembly members who command the majority, in the lower house. The leader of the majority in lower house becomes the Chief Minister and selects the cabinet members, from either lower (or) upper house. If one becomes CM or minister without being an MLA or MLC, he/she must become either of one within next 6 months. From the formation of the state in 1960, the Congress party or Congress-led alliance have ruled the state for the major part. Non-Congress government was first formed in 1978, then in 1995 with Shivsena-BJP alliance, and most recently in 2014 with a BJP-led alliance.
