South African Airways (SAA) is the flag carrier airline of South Africa. Its headquarters are in Airways Park on the grounds of O. R. Tambo International Airport in Kempton Park, Ekurhuleni, Gauteng. In partnership with SA Express, SA Airlink and its low-cost carrier, Mango, the airline flies to 56 destinations in South Africa, continental Africa and around the world from its Johannesburg hub, using a fleet of 44 aircraft. Vuyani Jarana has been CEO since November 2017. The airline has also been subject to scrutiny in the media due to past allegations of corruption and mismanagement.

It was established as Air Tanzania Corporation (ATC) in 1977 after the dissolution of East African Airways and has been a member of the African Airlines Association since its inception. The airline was wholly owned by the Tanzanian Government until 2002 when it was partially privatised as per the directive of the Bretton Woods Institutions to implement the country's Structural Adjustment Program. The government therefore reduced its shareholding to 51 percent and entered into a partnership with South African Airways.

The company's stated aim is to become the continent's first low-cost, pan-African airline, and the operation was initially created with the acquisition of Fly540, an airline operating in East Africa; flights in Fastjet's own name commenced in November 2012 in Tanzania. In order to satisfy local ownership and other requirements, the strategy is to create locally incorporated airlines or a series of licensees to operate services, using a common branding, operational standards and sales platform.
