East Madi Wildlife Reserve

East Madi Wildlife Reserve is a protected area located in Adjumani District in Uganda, in the Madi sub-region. [1] [2] [3] It covers an area of 831 km2. It is managed by Uganda Wildlife Authority under the supervision of Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities. [4] [5] [6] It was established as a reserve in 2002. [7]

Wildlife

East Madi Wildlife Reserve has a variety of flora and fauna which includes over 50 mammals, including hyenas, leopards, lions; more than 181 bird species including the shoebill stork; and 374 plant species. [8] [6] [7]

Tourism

This reserve is used for nature walks, game drives and bird watching. [8] [7]

Conservation status

There was a land conflict between the Uganda Wildlife Authority, the Amuru District Local Government and Adjumani District Local Government for land located within the East Madi Wildlife reserve that had started in 2005 when internally displaced persons from different camps occupied the East Madi Wildlife Reserve, which the wildlife authority called illegal. But the leaders in Amuru District local government claimed that the gazetted land for the reserve was located in their district. [5] [9] In 2012, over 6000 locals were evicted from East Madi Forest reserve by wildlife authority personnel. [10] This issue was resolved in 2015 after a land survey and establishment of the boundaries for the reserve between districts of Adjumani and Amuru was done by Government through the Ministry of Lands, Housing & Urban Development. [1] On 23 October 2017, the Uganda Wildlife Authority and Adjumani District Local Government were given full control of the reserve by the Ministry of Local Government. [5] [9]

In 2023, the constitutional court ruled that the East Madi Wildlife Reserve belonged to the Apaa community after a petition for creating this reserve in Adjumani District. [1]

Karuma Wildlife Reserve is a protected area located in Kiryandongo District in Uganda. It covers an area of 675.0 km2. It is managed by Uganda Wildlife Authority under the supervision of Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities. Its World Database on Protected Areas (WDPA) ID is 1439. It is on IUCN Management Category III. It was declared a Wildlife Reserve in 1964 but it was a controlled hunting area in 1962.

Mount Otzi Central Forest Reserve is a 188 square kilometer forest reserve located in Moyo District, West Nile Region, Uganda. It is situated on an escarpment that overlooks the confluence of River Achwa and the White Nile as it flows into South Sudan. The reserve is bordered on the North by the International border of South Sudan and to the South by the Moyo-Adjumani District border. Mount Otzi Forest Reserve is an important place for the surrounding people because bamboo poles and other non-timber goods are crucial for building materials and also provide lumber. Not only that, but the National Forestry Authority Department has designated it as an Important Biodiversity Conservation Area due to its importance as a large water catchment area.

Kebisoni Local Forest Reserve is a protected forest that is located with in Rubabo Subcounty in Rukungiri District in western Uganda. It It is managed by National Forestry Authority. Its WPDA ID is 40367. It was declared a forest reserve in 1998. It covers an area of 0.06 km2.

Kasato Central Forest Reserve is a protected tropical forest that is located in Kiryanga subcounty in Kagadi District in Western Uganda. It covers an area of 26.82 km2(2691 hectares). It managed by the National Forestry Authority. It was designated a reserve in 1965. Its WPDA ID is 39988.
